Puccini - Turandot (Marton, Domingo) (1987, NTSC, DVD9) The DVD version of Turandot is based on an outstanding MET production from 1988: “A straightforward, spectacular and star-cast staging by Franco Zeffirelli that comes over extremely well. At the heart of it is James Levine’s massive, stormy reading. The Met orchestra are in tremendous form; so is the chorus. Eva Marton sings with stinging power and passion; Plácido Domingo is a superb Calaf, Leona Mitchell is a silvery-voiced Liu. It is superbly directed and recorded...A clear first choice.” (Michael Scott Rohan, in: The Classical Video Guide, 1997, reviewing the LD release) Plácido Domingo (Calaf), Eva Marton (Turandot), Leona Mitchell (Liù) y Hugues Cuenod (Altoum) en el Metropolitan Opera House de New York en 1988, dirigidos por James Levine y con la escenografía y dirección artística de Franco Zeffirelli. Puccini – La Fanciulla del West (2005, NTSC, DVD9) 'Whether it is the prospect of seeing bandits, miners, and a sheriff swaggering around the opera stage shooting rifles and pistols, or the juxtaposition of Puccini’s lyrical sensibilities against the inherent crudities of the lawless Wild West, La fanciulla del West has struggled to gain the popularity of La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. In fact, aided by a remarkably inventive and modernistic score, Puccini actually makes it work as opera and drama. Puccini, to his credit, continued to evolve as a composer throughout his career. InFanciulla, he turns to a more Impressionistic idiom. It may not have the knockout melodies of the big four, but Puccini effectively integrates his arias into the dramatic context of the opera and enters fascinating new ground in terms of orchestration and harmonic development. He is clearly moving in the direction of Turandot. Giancarlo del Monaco’s spectacular ultra-realistic production unashamedly takes the opera for what it is. The first act presents a mammoth saloon setting that is necessary to contain a bar room brawl worthy of Zeffirelli in size and scope. The more intimate second act that contains the opera’s principal interpersonal dramatic developments (reminiscent of the second act of Tosca) occurs in a cutaway of Minnie’s cabin nestled in an isolated mountain setting, complete with snowflakes when the action occurs outside the cabin. The third act presents a desolate ghost town with spectral figures moving through a maze of grays and dark blues as they attempt to lynch Dick Johnson. The production provides plenty of dramatic contrast while it nicely captures the Wild West setting. The whole thing works exceptionally well, and is ultimately no more silly than any number of Verdi’s operas. This is rendered all the more realistic by a cast which I cannot imagine being surpassed. Barbara Daniels may not have the big or luscious soprano voice characteristic of the great Puccini sopranos, past and present (think Tebaldi, Price, Gheorghiu), but she immerses herself so completely into the dramatic aspects of her role that any vocal shortcomings are quickly forgotten. Domingo is fantastic in a role that is quite ideal for him, lying vocally somewhere between Rodolfo and Calaf. He is very comfortable meeting the acting requirements of the reformed bandit. Sherrill Milnes’s suave Jack Rance is just about perfect from a physical standpoint, and he refuses to let the role degenerate into a one-dimensional villain. This approach is emphasized in the powerful final scene that frames a frustrated and disappointed Rance remaining alone at center stage. The inspired choice of Leonard Slatkin as conductor appropriately emphasizes the importance of the orchestra in La fanciulla del West. His conducting is as dynamic as it is subtle, and he supports the singers superbly. The DVD contains subtitles in multiple languages. Sonically, there are PCM stereo, DTS 5.1, and Dolby 5.1 formats. Multichannel reveals a slight increase in the sense of air and depth, but there are no directional effects in the rear speakers, even with the various rifle shots and brawls. DTS has a slight advantage in terms of clarity and presence. The bass drum is thunderous in all formats. If you have any remote interest in La fanciulla del West, you can’t go wrong here. Highly recommended.!' The band's name is the title of the book Autobiography of a tramp by WH Davies borrowed. The typical Supertramp sound is defined mainly by the syncopated playing on a Wurlitzer A-200 (electric piano). A personal touch was also used in the former rock and pop music until then unusual instruments such as clarinet or saxophone (The Logical Song). With its successful concept of cryptic lyrics and keyboard-oriented soft rock Supertramp could still sell over 60 million albums worldwide. Picture and sound quality are not due to the old recordings on the amount of time, but for every fan, this DVD is mandatory. VERDI - LA TRAVIATA (Angela Gheorghiu, Frank Lopardo, Leo Nucci) Angela Gheorghiu is the definitive Violetta of her generation, the standard-setter against whom all other exponents of this role must be judged for the foreseeable future. Her affinity for Verdi's fragile, gentle-hearted courtesan is rooted in a fine balance of acting and singing skills. She looks right, her body language is eloquent without overstatement, and her voice is limpid, expressive, open to a variety of subtle shadings and used gracefully and intelligently. For this, her first Traviata, Covent Garden put together a production in 1994 that is solid and straightforward but otherwise unspectacular--a fairly subdued background against which her performance stands out all the more clearly. Though lacking the vocal splendor and personal magnetism of Placido Domingo, Frank Lopardo gives a sensitive performance as Alfredo, and Sir Georg Solti paces and accents this performance with a thoughtful subtlety that is relatively rare in his work. The result is deeply satisfying. --Joe McLellan Actors: Angela Gheorghiu, Frank Lopardo, Leo Nucci, Leah-Marian Jones, Gillian Knight Directors: Humphrey Burton, Peter Maniura Writers: Francesco Maria Piave Producers: Jan so Younghusband, Jane Pleydell-Bouverie, Stephany Marks Language: Italian (Dolby Digital 5.1), Italian (PCM Stereo) Subtitles: Türkçe, Spanish, German, French Studio: Decca Release Date: Aug 14 2001 Run Time: 134 minutes Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5:1, 448 kb/s Audio: pcm_s16be, 48000 Hz, stereo, 1536 kb/s Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, 5000 kb/s, 29.97 fps® => 640x480 Screenshots: Links: http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx62za/VerdiLaTraviata.part01.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx6306/VerdiLaTraviata.part02.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx5tfq/VerdiLaTraviata.part03.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx5tgm/VerdiLaTraviata.part04.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx631i/VerdiLaTraviata.part05.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx631y/VerdiLaTraviata.part06.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx62yu/VerdiLaTraviata.part07.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx5th2/VerdiLaTraviata.part08.rar http://extabit.com/file/2duy12hrx5tg6/VerdiLaTraviata.part09.rar

VERDI - IL TROVATORE (Metropolitan Opera) This Il Trovatore is with Sherril Milnes, Eva Marton, Dolora Zajjick, Luciano Pavarotti, conducted by James Levine at the Met in 1988 on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Dolora Zajjick is riveting as the gypsy mother and Pavarotti's rendition of Di quella Pira blows recent recordings by other current tenors to smithereens. Deutsche Grammophon's audio and video quality is superb--if only all the opera DVD's were this good I'd be in opera heaven. The DVD releases by DG also come with very good printed documentation. Highly recommended. Donizetti: Anna Bolena (2011, 2xDVD9, NTSC) Donizetti: Anna Bolena (Evelino Pido, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca) 2011 With her sensational role debut at the Vienna State Opera, superstar diva Anna Netrebko displays a performance of rare vocal and dramatic power. The Russian soprano sings the role of the unjustly accused second wife of British King Henry VIII, ‘veering between indignant fury and tender righteousness’ and demonstrating a new level of confidence in her technique with excellent ‘passagework, particularly in trills, and seamless runs even to the lowest notes’ (Opera News). The performance also stars DG mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, in ‘a fantastic display of bel canto’ (Opera News) as Anna's rival Giovanna Seymour. Ildebrando D’Arcangelo brings his beautifully dark tone to the role of Enrico and young Italian tenor Francesco Meli sings the demanding role of Lord Percy with a ‘youthful virility’ (Agence France Press), promising great things for the future. On the podium Evelino Pidò 'drew playing of unusual precision and refinement...making every note matter' (Financial Times). Michael Flatley's Celtic Tiger (2005, NTSC, DVD5) DVD5 | 4,40 Gb | 107 min | Video: NTSC, MPEG-2, 16:9 , 720 x 480 at 9800 kbps | Audio: AC-3 at 448 Kbps, 2 channels, 48.0 KHz Genre: Celtic , New Age , Ballet & Dance | Language: English (Dolby Digital 5.1) Celtic Tiger appears to be Michael Flatley's attempt at a concept album--a loose tracing of the Irish through history, from prehistoric times, to pesky run-ins with Vikings and British soldiers, to St. Paddy driving out the snakes, to... the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders? (Who knew so many of them were Irish?) The spectacle of it all is grand and ambitious in the best way of the new Las Vegas shows (O'Siegfried and McRoy?), and Flatley, the genius behind Riverdance and all its toe-tapping offspring, is simply undaunted. By anything. The traditional Irish dance, fiddling, and piping his fans adore are separated by slower segments using Martha Graham-esque modern set pieces, all well performed. But the audience doesn't really come alive unless it's Flatley, bedecked in his finery (one fave: a Gladiator tog to make Russell Crowe envious) and executing his precise, mind-bending choreography. As usual, he's surrounded himself with troupes of the best hoofers on the planet, and the comeliest female fiddlers this side of the Dixie Chicks. One of many highlights: "Celtic Fire," just Flatley on flute surrounding by the fiddling femme fatales at a dervish pace. A bonus featurette shows some behind the scenes, mostly in slow-mo, of the work going into mounting the ambitious show in Budapest. --A.T. Hurley. Tracklist 1. St. Patrick (angelus) 2. The Vikings 3.
