You Wanna Be on Top?: A Memoir of Makeovers, Manipulation, and Not Becoming America's Next Top Model by Sarah Hartshorne English | July 8, 2025 | ISBN: 0593735242 | True EPUB | 272 pages | 2.2 MB In this revealing memoir, a fan favorite America's Next Top Model contestant pulls back the curtain on the iconic but deeply flawed reality competition show, exposing the manipulation and chaos behind the scenes. Tyra Banks's America's Next Top Model was a cultural phenomenon with more than six million weekly viewers at its peak. Over its fifteen-year run, the show captured the glitz of the early aughts as well as its most toxic attitudes-from the glamorous but often questionable photo shoots to the cutting feedback from its highly respected if out-of-touch judges. But as its fans have grown up and as the next generation discovers ANTM, they've also begun to reckon with the enduring ways that the show has affected their body image and self-esteem. Sarah Hartshorne would have never guessed that her first foray into modeling would start with being blindfolded alongside three dozen other girls on a charter bus winding through Puerto Rico. In You Wanna Be On Top?, Cycle 9's only plus-size contestant takes us into the heart of the unforgiving auditions; the labyrinthian cruise ship the girls weren't allowed to enjoy; and, of course, the L.A. "model house" teeming with hidden cameras and elaborately constructed tensions. As the season unfolds and the producers' interview questions about her weight and her opinions of the other girls become increasingly pointed, Hartshorne uncovers the destabilizing methods employed to film "reality." Drawing on her experience as well as interviews with other contestants and production crew, Hartshorne answers the questions you always wanted to ask: Why didn't the house have a microwave or a dishwasher? Why did girls regularly faint during eliminations? Which judge was the meanest off camera? Why is it that the girls had their most meaningful conversations in closets? (Answer: It was the one place camera crews couldn't fit.) With tender honesty and sharp wit, Hartshorne dissects the iconic show with an unflinching gaze that refuses to smize. You Can Just Do Things: The Power of Permissionless Action by Jay Yang English | April 1, 2025 | ISBN: 8992459246 | 148 pages | EPUB | 2.64 Mb The world doesn't reward those who wait; it rewards those who act. From the moment we're old enough to dream, we're handed a script: follow the rules, wait your turn, and maybe, someday, opportunity will knock. But here's the truth: the system isn't designed to help you thrive; it's designed to keep you in place-waiting for permission, waiting for approval, waiting for a chance that may never come. The people who shape the world don't wait. They rewrite the script. Drawing from his own Permissionless journey-working with serial entrepreneur Noah Kagan and building a thriving marketing agency while still in school-Jay Yang argues that success isn't about luck, connections, or waiting for the right moment-it's about taking control. Through lessons drawn from pioneers like:Tony Fadell, who didn't wait for the perfect role-he built a prototype, pitched the iPod, and revolutionized how the world listens to music.Steven Spielberg, who didn't wait for someone to open the door-he snuck onto a Universal Studios lot, absorbed everything he could, and became the youngest director in Hollywood history.Taylor Swift, who didn't wait for the industry to find her-she moved to Nashville, positioned herself where the action was, and knocked on doors until someone gave her a shot. These stories-and many others-highlight one powerful truth: success is something you create, not something you're granted. You Can Just Do Things is for any young professional ready to accelerate their career, aspiring entrepreneur determined to build their own path, or anyone stuck in a 9-to-5 grind who knows they're meant for more. This isn't just a book about success-it's about taking control of your future and building a career and life on your own terms. Stop waiting. Start acting. The only permission you need is the one you give yourself. Years of Peril and Ambition: U.S. Foreign Relations, 1776-1921 (Oxford History of the United States) by George C. Herring English | February 17, 2017 | ISBN: 0190212462 | 472 pages | MOBI | 5.16 Mb Praised in the New York Times Book Review for its "Herculean power of synthesis," George C. Herring's 2008 From Colony to Superpower has won wide acclaim from critics and readers alike. Years of Peril and Ambition: U.S. Foreign Relations, 1776-1921 is the first volume of a new split paperback edition of that masterwork, making this award-winning title accessible to those with a particular interest in the first half of the United States' history. This first volume of Herring's international narrative charts the rise of the United States from a loose grouping of British colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast of North America into an emerging world power at the end of World War I. It tells an epic story of restless settlers pushing against weak restraints; of explorers, sea captains, adventurers, merchants, and missionaries carrying American ways to new lands. It analyzes countless crises, some resulting in war and others resolved peacefully. Above all, it is the tale of United States' expansion, commercial and political, across the North American continent, into the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean regions, and, economically, worldwide. Herring brings this first segment of America's dramatic emergence as a superpower to a close with the United States' post-World War I rise to the status of the world's most powerful nation, poised - however unsteadily -for global engagement in what would be called the American Century. Years of Peril and Ambition highlights the ongoing impact of the nation's international affairs on the household names of U.S. history but also on ordinary citizens. Featuring a grand cast of characters, encompassing statesmen and presidents, diplomats and foreigners, and rogues and rascals alike, this fast-paced account illuminates the central importance of foreign relations to the existence and survival of the nation. Writing the Brain: Material Minds and Literature, 1800-1880 by Stefan Schoumlberlein English | September 19, 2023 | ISBN: 0197693687 | 280 pages | MOBI | 12 Mb In the nineteenth century, American and British culture experienced an explosion of interest in writings about the brain. The years between 1800 and 1880 are often described as the emergence of modern neuroscience, with new areas of the brain being discovered and named. Naming was quickly followed by a drive to hypothesize functioning, a process that suggested thinking itself may be a mere physiological act. In Writing the Brain, Stefan Schöberlein tracks how literature encountered such novel, scientific theories of cognition-and how it, in turn, shaped scientific thinking. Before the era of modern psychology, a heterogeneous group of alienists, self-help gurus, and anatomists proposed that the structure of the brain could be used to explain how the mind worked. Suddenly, nineteenth-century readers and writers had to contend with the idea that qualities once ascribed to disembodied souls may arise from a mere lump of cranial matter. In a period when scientists and literary writers frequently published in the same periodicals, the ensuing debate over the material mind was a public one. Writing the Brain demonstrates, by examining several canonical works and textual rediscoveries, that these exchanges not only influenced how poets and novelists fictionalized the mind but also how scientists thought and talked about their discoveries. From George Combe to Charles Dickens, from Emily Dickinson to Pliny Earle, from Benjamin Rush to Alfred Tennyson, 1800s debated what it means to have or, rather, be a brain. Writing Testbenches using SystemVerilog by Janick Bergeron English | PDF | 2006 | 433 Pages | ISBN : 0387292217 | 3.1 MB If you survey hardware design groups, you will learn that between 60% and 80% of their effort is dedicated to verification. This may seem unusually large, but I include in "verification" all debugging and correctness checking activities, not just writing and running testbenches. Every time a hardware designer pulls up a waveform viewer, he or she performs a verification task. With today's ASIC and FPGA sizes and geometries, getting a design to fit and run at speed is no longer the main challenge. It is to get the right design, working as intended, at the right time. Unlike synthesizable coding, there is no particular coding style nor language required for verification. The freedom of using any l- guage that can be interfaced to a simulator and of using any features of that language has produced a wide array of techniques and approaches to verification. The continued absence of constraints and historical shortage of available expertise in verification, c- pled with an apparent under-appreciation of and under-investment in the verification function, has resulted in several different ad hoc approaches. The consequences of an informal, ill-equipped and understaffed verification process can range from a non-functional design requiring several re-spins, through a design with only a s- set of the intended functionality, to a delayed product shipment. Lynda Mugglestone, "Writing a War of Words: Andrew Clark and the Search for Meaning in World War One" English | ISBN: 0198870159 | 2022 | 368 pages | PDF | 3 MB Writing a War of Words is the first exploration of the war-time quest by Andrew Clark - a writer, historian, and volunteer on the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary - to document changes in the English language from the start of the First World War up to 1919. Clark's unique series of lexical scrapbooks, replete with clippings, annotations, and real-time definitions, reveals a desire to put living language history to the fore, and to create a record of often fleeting popular use. The rise of trench warfare, the Zeppelinophobia of total war, and descriptions of shellshock (and raid shock on the Home Front) all drew his attentive gaze. The archive includes examples from a range of sources, such as advertising, newspapers, and letters from the Front, as well as documenting social issues such as the shifting forms of representation as women 'did their bit' on the Home Front. Lynda's Mugglestone's fascinating investigation of this valuable archive reassesses the conventional accounts of language history during this period, recuperates Clark himself as another 'forgotten lexicographer', challenges the received wisdom on the inexpressibilities of war, and examines the role of language as an interdisciplinary lens on history. Wrecked: Unsettling Histories from the Graveyard of the Pacific (Emil and Kathleen Sick Book Series in Western History and Biography) by Coll Thrush English | May 27, 2025 | ISBN: 0295753765 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 32.8 MB A provocative retelling of shipwreck tales from the Northwest Coast The Northwest Coast of North America is a treacherous place. Unforgiving coastlines, powerful currents, unpredictable weather, and features such as the notorious Columbia River bar have resulted in more than two thousand shipwrecks, earning the coastal areas of Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island the moniker "Graveyard of the Pacific." Beginning with a Spanish galleon that came ashore in northern Oregon in 1693 and continuing into the recent past, Wrecked includes stories of many vessels that met their fate along the rugged coast and the meanings made of these events by both Indigenous and settler survivors and observers. Commemorated in museums, historical markers, folklore, place-names, and the remains of the ships themselves, the shipwrecks have created a rich archive. Whether in the form of a fur-trading schooner that was destroyed in 1811, a passenger liner lost in 1906, or an almost-empty tanker broken on the shore in 1999, shipwrecks on the Northwest Coast opens up conversations about colonialism and Indigenous persistence. Thrush's retelling of shipwreck tales highlights the ways in which the three central myths of settler colonialism―the disappearance of Indigenous people, the control of an endlessly abundant nature, and the idea that the past would stay past―proved to be untrue. As a critical cultural history of this iconic element of the region, Wrecked demonstrates how the history of shipwrecks reveals the fraught and unfinished business of colonization on the Northwest Coast. Women at Work in Italy (1750-1950): Their Economic Thought and Actions (Springer Studies in the History of Economic Thought) by Manuela Mosca English | September 24, 2024 | ISBN: 3031642805 | 309 pages | MOBI | 9.54 Mb This book reconstructs the economic thought of Italian women who produced written sources, and of those whose "only" legacy was their actions. The conceptual tools of economic history and the history of economic thought alike are used to reveal the economic ideas of women overlooked by historiography in four fields, namely as entrepreneurs, workers, educators, and politicians. As for the entrepreneurs, the book examines the businesswoman Isabella De Mari Doria (eighteenth century) and other figures active in both the industrialized and the informal sectors in the nineteenth century. The important issues of female employment and wage discrimination based on gender are analyzed, taking into account the debates of the period. In turn, the role of women in economic education in the first half of the twentieth century is reconstructed through the figure of Aurelia Josz, an educational entrepreneur who trained female agricultural entrepreneurs, managers, and teachers, and by exploring the presence of women at universities, both as students of economics and as educators and researchers. Lastly, the book takes a closer look at women involved in politics who dealt with economic issues: the socialist Anna Kuliscioff, the fascist Margherita Grassini Sarfatti, and the 21 women who took part in the Italian Constituent Assembly in June 1946. Given its scope, the book appeals to scholars and students of the history of economic thought, economic history, and women's studies. Wireless CMOS Frequency Synthesizer Design by J. Craninckx , M. Steyaert English | PDF | 1998 | 265 Pages | ISBN : 0792381386 | 36.1 MB The recent boom in the mobile telecommunication market has trapped the interest of almost all electronic and communication companies worldwide. New applications arise every day, more and more countries are covered by digital cellular systems and the competition between the several providers has caused prices to drop rapidly. The creation of this essentially new market would not have been possible without the ap pearance of smalI, low-power, high-performant and certainly low-cost mobile termi nals. The evolution in microelectronics has played a dominant role in this by creating digital signal processing (DSP) chips with more and more computing power and com bining the discrete components of the RF front-end on a few ICs. This work is situated in this last area, i. e. the study of the full integration of the RF transceiver on a single die. Furthermore, in order to be compatible with the digital processing technology, a standard CMOS process without tuning, trimming or post-processing steps must be used. This should flatten the road towards the ultimate goal: the single chip mobile phone. The local oscillator (LO) frequency synthesizer poses some major problems for integration and is the subject of this work. The first, and also the largest, part of this text discusses the design of the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). The general phase noise theory of LC-oscillators is pre sented, and the concept of effective resistance and capacitance is introduced to char acterize and compare the performance of different LC-tanks.
