Quatro paved the way for the riot grrrl movement with her tough, streetwise attitude and her skills as a musician with a hard-rock, edgy style. At the height of her career she scored such hits as "Stumblin' In," "48 Crash," "Daytona Demon" and the number 1 "Devil Gate Drive." 3. Cheap Trick - From Tokyo To You: Live In Japan (Rockumentary 2004) Untouched DVD | PAL format / Full Screen | VIDEO_TS folder | Dolby Digital 5.1 & 2.0 Surround | 4,34 GB Complete Scans > 200 MB | ~ 99 minutes | Label: Big3 Records / SPV GmbH | Cat. Number: SPV 97642 DVD Exciting live concert rockumentary filmed on their triumphant return to Japan, 25 years after "Live At Budokan". Features the definitive history in their own words of Cheap Trick, along with rare acoustic performances and songs released live for the very first time! In addition, intriguing, never heard interviews and behind the scenes bonus footage make this a treat for Cheap Trick fans worldwide. With a career that is approaching three decades, Cheap Trick continues to reinvigorate American Rock'n' Roll with a unique brand of high-powered pop that has been the foundation and inspiration for many of today's hottest acts. “ Japan has always had a special place in its heart for Cheap Trick. As we all know, it was Japan that gave the rocking Rockford quartet their first break (captured on 1979's extraordinary live set, At Budokan), and in 2003, the band returned to their adopted homeland once more, which serves as the basis for the DVD release, From Tokyo to You. Mixing interview segments and live performances, the DVD is a fine document of the state of Cheap Trick 2003. More than a quarter century after their first album was released, few veteran rock bands can go out there, play like they still mean it, and not be a parody of themselves -- and Cheap Trick is certainly one of the few exceptions (further proof: how many other still-existing bands of that era don't have to rely on extra-added side musicians and backing tapes?). The DVD's track list does a solid job of balancing classics ("Dream Police," "Surrender"), oft-overlooked gems ("Fan Club," "Big Eyes," and a fine acoustic reading of "Lookout"), and more recent fare ("Scent of a Woman," "Pop Drone," "Special One"). Complaints are few, but they would have to include that no full-length songs are included (most are inter-cut with dialogue, and begin mid-way through), and that a rediscovered crowd-pleaser of the last few years, "He's a Whore," is not included. Also featured are a few "bonus" features, the best of the bunch being a spot where three of the four members talk about each song performed on the DVD. Although not the finest Cheap Trick DVD release (you can put money on 2002's Music for Hangovers), From Tokyo to You is still highly recommended. -- Greg Prato, allmusic.com ” Contents: 01. 9. Video: PAL, MPEG-2, 720 x 576 (1.333) at 25.000 fps Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, LPCM 2.0 Stereo Menu: Yes Time: 121 min. Size: 7,64 Gb Copy: 1:1 New York's Beacon Theater is the ideal setting for a James Taylor concert and this DVD brilliantly shows why. A theater of this style and size brings a unique intimacy between the performer and the audience and this is evident by Taylor's frequent banter with the audience, and the way he seems to be enjoying himself onstage. The warm and dynamic acoustics which this theater imparts were captured impeccably on this DVD, and are presented in one of the finest Dolby 5.1 mixes I have ever heard. Live At The Beacon Theater showcases 25 song performances that go all the way back to Taylor's early 70's classics, and all the way up to his Grammy Award winning Hourglass album of 1997. He also mixes in a few interesting cover songs, including two from Buddy Holly. Taylor appears in excellent spirits this evening. His usual shy and reserved persona is clearly evident but he easily disarms the adoring audience with his charming between song chatter. However, like myself, the audience didn't come to hear Sweet Baby James talk, they came to hear him sing and pick that guitar of his, and he absolutely delivers. Taylor's vocals have never sounded better, and he had an amazing sounding band backing him on this show. He took some liberty with the arrangement of some of his classic songs, most notably on a somber version of "Fire And Rain" that only included Taylor on the acoustic guitar, accompanied by some excellent cello playing. Most of the song performances were exceptional, and ranged from stripped down, acoustic guitar numbers with only Taylor's guitar and vocals, to full blown productions including every member of his band. A few of the songs sounded uninspired and fell a little flat, when compared to the original versions, but this was hardly noticed among all of the other great performances. On "Shower The People", the male background vocalist handles the middle vocal section of the song and gives a dramatic, gospel-inspired vocal performance that made this old classic sound fresh. "Steamroller Blues" closed out the first set and featured Taylor playing a pretty impressive harmonica intro. This performance was a little bit lighter and more improvised than some other versions I have heard. Tracklist: 01. YOU CAN CLOSE YOUR EYES' 02. ANOTHER DAY 03. DADDY'S ALL GONE 04. EVERYDAY 05. Size: 4,64 GB Copy: 1:1 Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light is a doubly terrific treat for music lovers. For her fans, of course, it’s a legendary 1979 concert showcasing the singer/songwriter in full artistic glory. And for modern jazz lovers, it marks the chance to see a band of musicians that can be called nothing less than a supergroup. I have to admit, I fell into the latter category. Not that I didn’t like Joni Mitchell, per se…more that she just flew under my radar. I was familiar with a few of her songs, and had seen my share of vintage performance footage of the smoky-voiced folk singer who mesmerized crowds with six strings and two vocal chords. But when I saw that this title was coming out, I knew I had to have it anyway. She wasn’t the main attraction for me. It was her band. Pat Metheny on the guitar, Lyle Mays on the keys, Don Alias on the drums, and Michael Brecker on the sax is the kind of group that could headline themselves instead of just being a superstar’s backup band. And that’s without mentioning the best treat of all: Jaco Pastorius on bass, in what could possibly be the only commercially available film of his live playing (at least I haven’t found anything else yet). It’s a dream band, but Ms. Mitchell is no slouch as leader. Her jazzy, breezy tunes are well crafted, suited to her voice, and made into rich audio experiences by her boys. She’s no slouch on the guitar herself, and her rhythms provide the foundation while Pat, Jaco, Lyle, Michael and Don build wondrous arrangements around it. Starting with “In France They Kiss on Main Street”, the music is instantly warm and vibrant, and soon the songlist soars through tunes that are restrained like “Edith and the Kingpin”, energetic like “Coyote” or “Free Man in Paris”, or enchanting like “Black Crow”. The disc also features a pair of her lyrical arrangements for classic Charles Mingus tunes, including the slinky “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and one of my favorites, the funny revved-up “Dry Cleaner From Des Moines”. The show’s true song highlight is just that…a piece Joni performs alone to her own guitar, “Amelia”. With wistful lyrics and a haunting melody, this is about as good as the craft of songwriting can get. But her band gets showcases of their own…the lovely “Amelia” fades into a colorful, soaring magic carpet ride of a solo by Pat Metheny with Lyle Mays playing underneath. When he wants to, nobody plays the electric guitar as beautifully as Pat. Jaco gets his turn in the spotlight too, breaking out with a thunderous rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone From the Sun” by creating layers of sound with his digital delay before tearing into an overdriven assault of machine gun harmonics that might leave most aspiring bassists in tears. For the last two numbers, Joni sings a cappella with The Persuasions. “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” is charming, but I’m not sure she has quite the right voice for doo-wop. The finale is sadly a bit of a drag. “Shadows and Light” goes on for a bit too long, and is a let down energy-wise from the music that preceded it. Still, the concert is a wonderful listen. It would have earned a higher film rating except for one thing: the constant interruption of ridiculous filmed footage that frequently runs in place of the band performing. Starting with a clip or two from the 50s like Chuck Berry and Rebel Without a Cause, it continues on through many of the songs. It’s a rather annoying waste. When I buy a concert video, I want to see singers singing and musicians playing…call me kooky. As director, Joni Mitchell gets the blame. I guess she thought she was being artistic, but her strange and intrusive visions actually took a little something away from the magic she and her band was creating on the stage. That quibble aside, Shadows and Light is still an indelible concert experience. Joni fronts a supergroup of modern jazz legends and makes plenty of enchantment…all music fans are likely to appreciate it. This review is dedicated to the late, great Jaco Pastorius, who left a void nearly 15 years ago in the music world that still hasn’t been filled. 13. Al Di Meola, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke - Live at Montreux -DVD 9 (1994) DVD9 | PAL 720x576 (4:3) 25.00fps | 103 minutes | 6.6 GB | Audio Format : Dolby Digital 5.1 - English PCM Stereo - English DTS Surround | English Genre:Jazz fusion | Release date: 2005 “It was at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1994 that Al Di Meola, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clarke played as a trio for the first time. Clarke and Di Meola had been part of Return to Forever and while they were comfortable in the familiarity of knowing each other, Ponty reached in and became a perfect fit. That language of understanding is seen to advantage on this portrait. The music they played that night were taken from their individual projects. There were other tunes that would later be included on their album The Rite of Strings. These were songs that captured the sublime and the earthy, the gentle and the flighty. They get off on the right note with the Spanish tinged “Song to John,” the playing deep in the groove of the heart. And even as each turns in a strong performance, the highlight is the arresting duologue between Clarke and Di Meola. Monty Alexander joins them on an encore of the tune. He dimensions the tune with his crisp flights while Di Meola reins in the pace for a stimulating extension of the melody. They weave a spell of magic on “La Cancion de Sofia” and, in doing so, enhance the remarkable beauty of the composition. Ponty uses the upper register of the violin for a quick emphasis, the rhythm moves into high gear and then comes full circle to the warm embrace of the melody. Of the solo turns, Clarke comes off the best on “School Days,” his extraordinary technique married to a brilliant level of creativity. Ponty uses delayed effect to thicken the texture of his “Eulogy to Oscar Romero,” but it does have a tempered depth, and Di Meola has a clean, crisp presence on “Summer Country Song.” There are some excellent close-ups which enhance involvement with the music and the musicians. The program runs 103 minutes and is full screen. And then there is the very welcome informative booklet that Eagle Rock tucks into its DVDs Set List: 01. Song to John 02. Memory Canyon 03. Bonnie Raitt - Road Tested (2001) DVD-9 | Runtime: 105 min. | 7,61 GB | Copy: Untouched Video: PAL, MPEG-2, 720 x 576 (1.333) at 25.000 fps | Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 at 384 Kbps, Dolby Digital 2 at 192 Kbps, 48.0 KHz Genre: Rock, Blues, Country | Label: Capitol Records | Covers: Not included “ Singer/guitarist Bonnie Raitt did not begin to win the comparable commercial success due her until the release of the aptly titled 1989 blockbuster Nick of Time; her tenth album, it rocketed her into the mainstream consciousness nearly two decades after she first committed her unique blend of blues, rock, and R&B to vinyl. Born in Burbank, CA, on November 8, 1949, she was the daughter of Broadway star John Raitt, best known for his starring performances in such smashes as Carousel and Pajama Game. After picking up the guitar at the age of 12, Raitt felt an immediate affinity for the blues, and although she went off to attend Radcliffe in 1967, within two years she had dropped out to begin playing the Boston folk and blues club circuit. Signing with noted blues manager Dick Waterman, she was soon performing alongside the likes of idols including Howlin' Wolf, Sippie Wallace, and Mississippi Fred McDowell and in time earned such a strong reputation that she was signed to Warner Bros. Debuting in 1971 with an eponymously titled effort, Raitt immediately emerged as a critical favorite, applauded not only for her soulful vocals and thoughtful song selection but also for her guitar prowess, turning heads as one of the few women to play bottleneck. Her 1972 follow-up, Give It Up, made better use of her eclectic tastes, featuring material by contemporaries like Jackson Browne and Eric Kaz, in addition to a number of R&B chestnuts and even three Raitt originals. 1973's Takin' My Time was much acclaimed, and throughout the middle of the decade she released an LP annually, returning with Streetlights in 1974 and Home Plate a year later. With 1977's Sweet Forgiveness, Raitt scored her first significant pop airplay with her hit cover of the Del Shannon classic "Runaway"; its follow-up, 1979's The Glow, appeared around the same time as a massive all-star anti-nuclear concert at Madison Square Garden mounted by MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), an organization she'd co-founded earlier. Throughout her career, Raitt remained a committed activist, playing hundreds of benefit concerts and working tirelessly on behalf of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. By the early '80s, however, her own career was in trouble -- 1982's Green Light, while greeted with the usual good reviews, again failed to break her to a wide audience, and while beginning work on the follow-up, Warners unceremoniously dropped her. By this time, Raitt was also battling drug and alcohol problems as well; she worked on a few tracks with Prince, but their schedules never aligned and the material went unreleased. Instead, she finally released the patchwork Nine Lives in 1986, her worst-selling effort since her debut. Many had written Raitt off when she teamed with producer Don Was and recorded Nick of Time; seemingly out of the blue, the LP won a handful of Grammys, including Album of the Year, and overnight she was a superstar. 1991's Luck of the Draw was also a smash, yielding the hits "Something to Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me." After 1994's Longing in Their Hearts, Raitt resurfaced in 1998 with Fundamental. Silver Lining appeared in 2002, followed by Souls Alike in 2005, both on Capitol Records. A year later, Bonnie Raitt and Friends was released, featuring guest appearances from Norah Jones and Ben Harper among others. This 105 minute DVD was recorded live in Oakland at the historic Paramount Theater. Bonnie is joined by friends Bryan Adams, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, and Kim Wilson on this program which includes many of her best known and Grammy award-winning hits. Songs featured include "Something To Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up On You", "Longing In Their Hearts", and "Angel From Montgomery." Country rock diva Bonnie Raitt sings some of her best-loved songs -- and welcomes musical guests Bryan Adams, Jackson Browne and Bruce Hornsby. A sort of earthy yet tough female cowboy, singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt has quietly crossed gender boundaries to become a musician of consistently high quality. On ROAD TESTED, the country-rock performer is filmed in concert performing eleven songs. The guest performers, who include Bruce Hornsby and Jackson Browne, are a testament to her talent. Tracks include "Rock Steady" (with Bryan Adams), "Thing Called Love" (with Bruce Hornsby), "Burning Down the House" and more. ” Tracklist: 01. Thing Called Love (with Bruce Hornsby) 02. Divided We Fall was released again in 2000 with the audio soundboard recordings from the The Wall concerts synced with the video. Roger Waters is the rights holder to all videos shot during The Wall Tour. He has given conflicted answers on the status of the concert films he allowed made, stating from "trying to locate this footage for historical purposes but was unsuccessful and considers it to be lost forever" to "I have all of the film but am reluctant to release". The road crew was given special permission to film the concert at Earl's Court and this is where the film seems to come from. It was shot from three separate angles, with three separate cameras with professional pan and zoom features, and on tripods. There was no camera jitter and movement, no low quality shots, no splicing or flickering evident. This is the Harvested version of this great show. This is a superb upgrade, especially in sound. This has Mono and “Fake” Stereo. Picture quality is not the greatest upgrade but is definitely better than my previous DVD of this show. Disc 1 also contains some very cool extras such as ticket stubs, venue info, storyboards, and more with the album music in the background. Disc 2 also contains a bonus with the band and others talking about the shows and concept of the wall, very cool. Overall this is one of the best DVD’s I have ever seen, it is so nice to finally have this show with some stellar sound and picture upgrade. ” Track Listing DVD1: 01. Master Of Ceremonies 02. I really admire Steve Vai and his guitar playing, but it should be said that some of his music is really difficul to listen to. My Guitar teacher said a very good phrase, that the technique must be your tool, but not your aim. Steve Vai does the opposite, he always needs to shred to show his great technique, and sometimes it is not needed at all. The show at Astoria is an example of constant shredding. I really like shredders like Paul Gilbert or Joe Satriani but none of their shows is so difficult to watch as Steve's. To begin with, I must say that Steve Vai managed to gather a "dream team". Let's start with Dave Weiner, who is very young but who is already a guitar-virtuoso. Then goes Tony MacAlpine, who is also another guitar-virtuoso, but during this concert he also played keyboards. He also plays solo at the concert, which shows his great skills of a keyboard player. Billy Sheehan, "Van Halen, who plays the bass" also is another star. And Virgil Donati plays drums. As you see the Steve Vai's band consits only of great musicians. Is it good or bad? Both, actually. You will see great instruments-playing, but you know all of the members want play at their best, very fast, playing some difficult patterns. But it's really difficult to watch it for three hours. I felt exhausted after watching the show. As for the songs, Vai made a good choice and he plays not only his best songs like "The Crying Machine" or "For the Love of God", he also plays a couple of songs by Jimi Hendrix. Fire and Little Wing to be exact. Steve Vai is actully not a bad singer. You can also hear Billy Sheehan's song "Shy Boy". And a song from Billy Sheehan's solo album "Compression" "Chameleon".Steve Vai and Billy have a duel, both are playing incredibly fast. Dave Weiner plays song from his solo album "Dave Weiner's party piece", but during the most part of the concert he is only a rhythm guitarist. Tony MacAlpine also comes out and plays guitar. By the way, Tony MacAlpine's guitar playing is not worse than Steve Vai's . There are a lot of songs from one of Steve Vai's best albums "Passion and Warfare". You can hear relatively new " Whispering a Prayer" which was nominated for Grammy. So the fans of Steve Vai will be really pleased to see their favourite Steve Vai's songs. There will be a great variety of musical styles on the DVD. You can hear funky "The Crying Machine", heavy metal "Chameleon" or "Bad Horsie", some ballads like "Blue Powder", some rock and roll "Erotic Nightmares". On the whole, the melodies are very catchy, the riffs are great. The ballads are really beautiful. Also Steve Vai is the man, who has a good sense of humour. He is constantly joking. He is also speaking with the crowds almost after each song he plays. He is also changing his clothes. For example, for "the heavy-metal section of the show", he puts on clothes, which is similar to the clothes of soe troops fromm different games like "Dune" or something. In conclusion, I'd like to say that i would really recommend this DVD to all the Steve Vai fans, and to the fans of guitar music, who also play guitar. You will see the incredible playing of the musical instruments. Non-musicians will be really bored to watch the show. But musicians may also be bored to watch the show, because of the fact I've already mentioned. ” Music Performer: - Steve Vai / Guitar - Billy Sheehan (guest) / Bass - Tony MacAlpine (guest) / Guitar, Keyboards - Virgil Donati (guest) / Drums - Dave Weiner (guest) / Guitar Tracklist: Disc one: Live 01. 22. Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love: Under Review (2009) DVD-5 | Runtime: 104 min. | 4,19 GB | Copy: Untouched Video: NTSC, MPEG-2, 720 x 480 (1.333) at 29.970 fps | Audio: Dolby Digital 2 at 198 Kbps, 48.0 KHz Genre: Rock, Indie Rock | Label: Pride | Covers: Not included “ For my first 'A Classic Album Under Review' DVD it's the only Kate Bush album I own; the sublime Hounds Of Love. An Album Under Review dissects a particularly seminal recording by taking a careful look at the artist's career - generating context if you will - then allowing various experts to dissect the album track-by-track. For true fans the prospect is like catnip - a plus-sized commentary track for a favorite record. In practice, the affair reads like a documentary; lots of talking-head interviews interspersed with still shots and, for this series, tons of snippets of music videos. Bush was a leading proponent of revolutionizing music videos, but time has passed, so those examples displayed from her first four albums, while arresting, are a bit loony by today's standards - lots of experimental dance and folks roller-skating around in dunce caps, for example. Yet by the time Hounds Of Love rolls around, her videos have become quite energetic and engaging, especially the rapturous 'The Big Sky' (which will have you up and dancing) - her Hounds videos are documents that truly enhance the audio experience like few videos are able, and it's lovely to see bits of each. It would be nicer to see them complete. Kate Bush fans should certainly sit back and enjoy 90 minutes about her career, with almost a half hour of history leading up to the title album, we journey from her prodigal start in 1978 to the moment the needle runs out of the groove on Hound's final track 'The Morning Fog.' As a casual fan and sometimes musician who adores the album, I was entranced throughout. It's likely that people who have never heard of Bush will be interested as well, an achievement for such a specialized piece of programming - but not so special for an album featuring possibly the strongest A-side released in the '80s. The strength of Bush's music draws you in, while the care, intelligence and respect devoted to talking about each track is truly engaging and enriching. Among others, journalist/ DJ Kris Needs (Zigzag magazine) puts Bush in perspective with the times, and talks about how the album was received. Bush's biographer Lucy O'Brien places the artist in the firmament of other women rockers while examining the heady themes explored on the record. Pianist and historian Chris Ingham breaks down compositional motifs employed by Bush to give the record its unique feel, and drummer Charlie Morgan (who played on the album) provides real insight into the record's unique percussive feel, some of how it was recorded, and what it was like working with Bush. Lastly, archive interviews from 1985 find Bush herself talking about the album. The enthusiasm each displays for an album almost 25-years-old is infectious, providing a thorough, well-rounded look for deepening your understanding of the disc and urging new listeners to check it out. Musicians especially will be invigorated by accounts of unfettered creativity and practical attitudes for recording that are refreshing. Bush or label EMI does not authorize this DVD; a shame as it would be nice to hear Bush reflect on the time. Packaging is a bit misleading as well, touting 'live and studio versions of every track on the album.' I'll assume this refers to when Morgan and Ingham play snippets on drums or piano during their interview segments, and when bits of the recorded versions are played in music video form, however neither example represents a complete version of the song - far from it - so don't come in expecting two whole iterations of the album, just examples woven throughout the 90 minute feature. Aside from those quibbles, this is a stellar effort that will have you reaching for whatever it is you play music on these days. ” Tracklist: 01. The Kick Inside [8:39] 02. Lionheart [6:40] 03.
