While "Feel Like Makin' Love" is perhaps the goodtime sex anthem for the ages, Bad Company is hardly a one-trick pony. What's always been fascinating about Bad Company beyond its chemical makeup of Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke of Free, Mott the Hoople's Mick Ralphs and original bass player Boz Burrell from King Crimson is the fact a corral of Brits wholly captured the essence of American Southern rock with an occasional twist of prog. You could fool a fool or two in some weathered off-road juke joint by saying "Can't Get Enough," "Simple Man," "Ready for Love," "Shooting Star," "Bad Company" and of course, "Feel Like Makin' Love" were knocked out by a strongarm section of diehard Savannah rebs. Even though "Rock and Roll Fantasy" has a bit of disco swing considering the year it came out on 1979's Desolation Angels, Bad Company's tappity gloss-up over the music industry's alluring stranglehold over people is still pure bang on top of its sway. It feels like pure Americana, but check again. It's the Union Jack swinging behind Bad Company. Bad Company's records may not always have gained mass critical acclaim beyond the 1974 self-titled album and Straight Shooter the following year. Push to shove, however, this is a band most consider one of the first authentic "supergroups." Together they've sold millions and have left a sizable cluster of well-loved ditties the fans are sure to love on their new Live at Wembley album and DVD. While Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke failed to garnish much interest in their Bad Company resurrections minus Paul Rodgers, the 1999 official reunion of the group brought about hopes of a true comeback. Unfortunately, all that culminated in this get-together was The Original Bad Company Anthology which at least included a few new tracks. Worse, Boz Burrell died in 2006, which prompted Bad Company with three leftover original members in 2008 to once again hit the arena trail in his honor. Live at Wembley is a Bad Company performance captured last year which stands up as one of the band's finest hours, three-fifths represented they may be. For the record, Bad Company is now rounded out by guitarist Howard Leese and bassist Lynn Sorensen. While the sold-out UK concertgoers are often reserved and often emphatic, the Wembley homecoming of Bad Company is a pretty humbling experience to behold. So much even Paul Rodgers has to ask his audience how they're doing, and it's not just a typical stage plug. There's a detectable sense of nervousness between Rodgers and the crowd. Bad Company is well in the pocket of their set through "Can't Get Enough," "Honey Child," "Run With the Pack," "Burnin' Sky." It's after their laidback cover of The Coasters' "Young Blood" where Rodgers checks his listeners for a pulse and they begin to respond. Granted, Rodgers does get Wembley to participate right out the gate during "Can't Get Enough," but it's obvious how much performing in his native land means to him. You know what the people are expecting. They're no different than American beer bellies squeezing through the aisles for a freshening up of the suds before the hallowed party jams in Bad Company's set arrives. While there's a huge upswing in the Wembley crowd when "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Shooting Star," "Rock 'n Roll Fantasy," "Movin' On" and "Ready For Love" sieve out, Bad Company does keep the set well-engaged with "Gone Gone Gone," "Seagull" and "Simple Man." The latter two are perfectly translated with gorgeous acoustic intros and they remind people there's artistry beyond the straight-up whumping to Bad Company. "Bad Company" live is easily the band's rally cry, because Wembley is full-on electric by the time Rodgers steps up to the piano and plunks down the first few notes. Whatever their walks of life, the Bad Company fans are united rebels in an unknown cause, simply by caterwauling "Bad Company's" chorus in tandem. Again, no different than their eastern counterparts. "Bad Company" is an instant insurrection and it should be considered a metal genesis tune along with "Burnin' Sky," "Simple Man" and "Ready For Love." More superficially satisfying than hearing these nuggets scattered ad nauseum on classic rock stations, Live at Wembley is a professional and enthusiastic recreation of Bad Company's golden years. It may be disarming to some to see a couple of grayhairs peeling off tremolos in front of Marshall stacks, but show your respect, because Bad Company does likewise, for Boz during "Shooting Star" and most importantly, for their fans. This is a well-intended set for hit lovers and music heads. In 2008, some 11 studio albums into his career (according to Adams' own calculation, apparently taking soundtracks into consideration, because by a simple count of studio albums 11 seems to be his tenth full-length proper album), his fondness for obvious hooks had flattened into clichés, with all of 11 feeling like something he'd done before, some ten or 15 years previously. To a certain extent, Adams' refusal to acknowledge shifting fashions was admirable -- especially for somebody who has made a name for himself in the new millennium with his fashionable photography -- but 11 is such a relic of '90s mainstream rock that it almost feels as if it were cryogenically frozen in 1993 and unfrozen later. It's all cavernous drums, shimmering guitar textures cribbed from U2, rockers that don't rock, and ballads that are so stately they don't quite seem to end. This outdated sound would have been forgivable, even charming, if Adams retained his knack for big hooks that could suck you in despite your better instincts, but 11 is resolutely devoid of memorable melodies. It doesn't quite seem like Adams is incapable of writing hooks anymore but rather that he can't be bothered, that he'd rather be pursuing his photography and that he just completed this album because it was about time to get another record out there. He's enough of a pro to create an album that sounds for all the world like the kind of glistening, gleaming Bryan Adams album his fans have grown to love, but the stilted predictability of 11 offers a reason why he hasn't had a big American hit since the mid-'90s: he sounds like he's stuck in that time and has no desire to leave it. Last year this 2-DVD/book set was released as "Classic Heep - Live from the Byron era", what a treat! Mainly due to the efforts from fellow Dutchman Louis Rentrop (named by the band as the #1 UH fan on this globe!) here is an excellent 2-DVD (including a wonderful book) featuring live footage from Uriah Heep, recorded between 1972 and 1976 (and some footage from David Byron solo, five songs from "Rough diamond - 1977). Their frontman was David Byron, an archetypical rock and roll singer: dynamic, dramatic, ego-centric, theatrical and extravert on stage and capricious, narcistic, emotional instabile and self-destructive (like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones) in his own life, no wonder he died as an alcohol-addict in 1985. On this DVD you can perfectly witness his ego-centric and theatrical, a bit queery 'stage antics', like a 'Freddy Mercury-avant-la-lettre'! DVD1 features concerts from Japan, the UK and the USA in the era 1973-76. Eventually we can enjoy Ken Hensley on his Hammond organ and with slide guitar play (like on "Tears in my eyes"), Mick Box with his fiery and enthousiastic guitarwork and from the propulsive and solid rhythm-section Gary Thain/Lee Kerslake. But the focus is on David Byron, he gives most of the songs an extra dimension like "Sunrise", "Love machine", "The easy road" and "Shady lady" and especially in the R&R-medley, EXCELLENT! My highlight on DVD1 is the version of "July morning" (a compilation of live material 1973-76 like the Dutch rock festival Pinkpop 1976, my father didn't allow me to go because of the 'drugs abuse' he explained later!). DVD2 (named "Collectors Rarities") features songs from Pinkpop 1976 with an extended guitar solo from Mick Box. Other strong tracks are "Look at yourself", "The wizard" (acoustic guitars) and "July morning" (studio 1972, USA) delivering a great shot from above on his Hammond B3 organ and Minimoog synthesizer! And we can watch John Wetton (he had just left Roxy Music) during the USA tour and on Pinkpop 1976. Bonus videos include Walk Away, Dream Warriors, Heaven Sent, and Burning Like A Flame, all surrounded by intro's from Don Dokken and Mick Brown. Also their is a 30 minute video of Don and Mick reminiscing about the Video, the past, and what the future holds for dokken. The quality of transfer is good, and well worth the investment for 80's fans. Sure, the style of big hair and spandex is dated, but the songs remain great. With vocalist Don Dokken's captivating stage presence and guitarist George Lynch's high-energy style, the band combined rockers such as "Kiss of Death" and power ballads such as "Alone Again" in order to create a number of best-selling albums. Dokken's roots date back to the late '70s, when Lynch, along with drummer Mick Brown, teamed up with Don Dokken to form the Boyz. In 1981, Don moved to Germany and was signed to Carerre Records. The band, now simply known as Dokken, recorded and released Breaking the Chains, their first studio album, in 1983. While the record failed to retain a decent chart position in the United States, the group was immensely popular in Europe. After a tour in Germany, Dokken was signed to Elektra Records, and Jeff Pilson became their first official bassist. In 1984, the band released Tooth and Nail, which featured the hit songs "Into the Fire," "Just Got Lucky," and "Alone Again." With heavy MTV and radio airplay, Dokken found themselves topping the charts worldwide, and Tooth and Nail eventually sold over one-million copies in the U.S. alone. Following a tour with the Scorpions, the group recorded Under Lock and Key in 1985, which had a similar success due to the hits "In My Dreams" and "It's Not Love." In 1987, the band released Back for the Attack, which featured a track they had written as the subtitle for the third Nightmare on Elm Street film, "Dream Warriors." The coinciding music video, which included scenes of the band interacting with the movie's characters, was their most popular ever, and Back for the Attack became Dokken's third record to reach platinum status. The album's subsequent tour resulted in a live compilation, Beast From the East, which was released shortly before the band broke up in 1988 due to Don Dokken's and Lynch's creative differences. After the disbanding of Dokken, Don pursued a solo career with Up from the Ashes, and Lynch formed the Lynch Mob, releasing an album in 1990; both releases failed to chart. In 1992, the band reunited, but it wasn't until 1995 when they signed with Columbia Records and released Dysfunctional, which was met with harsh reviews and poor sales. Tensions once again seemed to hover around the group as they recorded the live acoustic release, One Live Night, in 1996 under the CMC label. In 1997, the band released Shadowlife, which was met with a similar response to their past two recordings. In 1998, Lynch left a second time to reunite Lynch Mob, and was replaced with Winger guitarist Reb Beach for 1999's Erase the Slate. This was followed in 2000 by another concert record, Live from the Sun, which captured the Beach lineup at Anaheim's Sun Theater. Beach left the group and was replaced by John Norum, and the group recorded Long Way Home for release in the spring of 2002. In 2003, ex-Warlock guitarist Jonathan Levin and ex-Ted Nugent and Yngwie Malmsteen bassist Barry Sparks joined the group, resulting in the release of Hell to Pay the following year. Nevertheless, Adams' MTV Unplugged is a strong effort, featuring stripped-down versions of such staples as "Summer of '69," "Cuts Like a Knife," and "Heaven" that prove that he's a resourceful straight-ahead rocker with a knack for a hook. There's also a handful of surprises, like early cuts like "Fits Ya Good" and a few new songs, that keep the record interesting for dedicated fans, but the overall quality of the music makes the record one of his best efforts of the '90s. 'Live in Dublin' (which is being concurrently released on CD, DVD and Blu-ray) features a wide-ranging collection of the best performances from those three concerts, including a host of songs from Springsteen's latest album ("The Seeger Sessions"), some radical interpretations from The Boss' past songbook, plus a few songs that have never before been captured on a Springsteen release. To be honest, I wasn't aware of Sprinsteen's most recent tour when I sat down to watch 'Live in Dublin,' but even as only a casual Bruce Springsteen fan, I found this concert an absolute joy to watch -- there are many blistering performances here, and Springsteen himself seems absolutely invigorated by the unique setlist captured on this release. Be warned: you won't find a 'Born in the U.S.A,' 'Dancing in the Dark' or 'Born to Run' in here, but I doubt any Springsteen fan will mind. 'Live in Dublin' is also a testament to how riveting a simple live musical performance can be when passion isn't sacrificed for presentation. There is no big light show to distract our eyes, nor any video screens flashing half-naked dancers gyrating on poles, yet the energy that infuses every song on 'Live in Dublin' never fails to captivate. Often with concert discs like these, the viewer's enjoyment is directly tied to the number of songs they recognize, yet in this case even if I didn't recognize a good three-fourths of the songs on the setlist, the sheer power and focus of the musicians on stage kept me rapt with attention. Despite the fact that a good number of the songs included are Pete Seeger covers, Springsteen howls every line as if he wrote it himself. The British group «Cutting Crew» The British group «Cutting Crew» was founded in 1985 by vocalist Nick Van Eden and guitarist Kevin Scott McMichael. A native of East Sussex, Van Eden started off with presentations in the school band, which performed the songs of their own compositions as well as cover versions of songs known groups such as the «Small Faces» and «Free». Subsequently, the fate brought him together with renowned producer Chesom Chandler, former bass player «The Animals», once revealed to the world of the legendary virtuoso guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Soon, Chandler sent the young musician on tour in Poland, along with his then-wards, a group of «Slade». However, they were still packing the seats in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd on this well-shot movie, directed by one of the most prominent figures in music documentary-making (Geoff Wonfor, most famous for directing The Beatles Anthology series). It's a straightforward record of a flashy mid-'80s hit pop band in concert, with plenty of shadowy, shifting colored lighting and much slick posing by the fashionably dressed on-stage players. The 13-song set contains a number of their biggest hit singles, including "True," "Gold," "Through the Barricades," "Fight for Ourselves," "Chant No. 1," "To Cut a Long Story Short," and "Lifeline." Augmenting the five-man lineup are keyboardist/singer Toby Chapman and backing singers Gillian O'Donovan and Susie O'List, contributing to the sense of a production that's slightly grandiose without being spectacularly big-budget. The DVD's a widescreen presentation with remixed and digitally remastered 5.1 sound, and adds a full 40 minutes of footage from the band's music videos, including a segment on the making of the "Fight for Ourselves" clip. Also offered on the DVD is a good-humored, fairly informative commentary track by guitarist/songwriter Gary Kemp and bassist Martin Kemp, in which they discuss the show, the songs, and some side topics like their affection for punk. Funniest line in the commentary track: "There may be a break in the proceedings now for [lead singer] Tony [Hadley] to say 'all right,'" it warns as an early number comes to an end. El concierto fue grabado en el histórico Saenger Theater in Mobil, Alabama y es una toma íntima en que vemos a Robert versionando su material nuevo y también algún clásico, pero con una línea musical orientada al soul, haciendo uso de su timbre vocal tan apropiado para este género, que es la directriz que ha guiado sus últimas producciones como "This Time" (2009). Sin embargo, el blues siempre está presente en su música y también algunos tracks de corte rock and roll. El DVD contiene doce tracks en los que se alcanzan estados sonoros etéreos gracias a la musicalidad de cortes como "Love 2009", "Anytime", "Right next door", "Lotta Lovin'" o "I can't fail" que pueblan la vereda más soul, aunque no purista del DVD. "Chicken in the Kitchen", "Sittin' on top of the world" una excelente versión del clásico de Walter Vinson y Lonnie Chatmon, en la que nos deleitamos con un solo de la stratocaster de Robert, no ambicioso, pero intenso, "Smokin' gun" y la brillante "That's what keeps me rockin'" que se alza como un manifiesto, son las encargadas de aportar con los sonidos del alma de tres acordes del blues.
