Fecha Edición: 20/11/2005 Discográfica: EMI-ODEON S.A. Even though the festival featured some of the most celebrated artists in the jazz world, Motown's premiere soul man was awarded one of the warmest welcomes.Marvin opens his set with a funk fortified rendition of his 1977 chart topper 'Got To Give It Up', instantly creating an irresistible groove that must have converted many doubters in the crowd. He follows this with 'Funky Space Reincarnation' and 'Come Get To This', which leads seamlessly into another of his atmospheric slow grooving gems, 'Lets Get It On'.For over an hour and a half we are able to witness Marvin perform his numerous hits including a medley of his Tammy Terrell duets. 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)' and 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' all delivered with Marvin's renowned passion and vigour. Marvin not only put on a dazzling display, but also proved exactly why he has carved out his own chapter in the soul music story. On record Marvin Gaye is never less than outstanding and on stage always spectacular. Here you can enjoy the best of both worlds, on a specially remastered version producing excellent PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and DTS 5.1 surround. While first working at Motown as a session drummer and playing on early hits by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, he met Gordy's sister Anna, and married her in late 1961. Upon mounting a solo career, Gaye struggled to find his voice, and early singles failed. Finally, his fourth effort, "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," became a minor hit in 1962, and his next two singles - the 1963 dance efforts "Hitch Hike" and "Can I Get a Witness" - both reached the Top 30. With 1963's "Pride and Joy," Gaye scored his first Top Ten smash, but often found his role as a hitmaker stifling - his desire to become a crooner of lush romantic ballads ran in direct opposition to Motown's all-important emphasis on chart success, and the ongoing battle between his artistic ambitions and the label's demands for commercial product continued throughout Gaye's long tenure with the company. With 1964's Together, a collection of duets with Mary Wells, Gaye scored his first charting album; the duo also notched a number of hit singles together, including "Once Upon a Time" and "What's the Matter With You, Baby?" As a solo performer, Gaye continued to enjoy great success, scoring three superb Top Ten hits - "Ain't That Peculiar," "I'll Be Doggone," and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" - in 1965. In total, he scored some 39 Top 40 singles for Motown, many of which he also wrote and arranged. With Kim Weston, the second of his crucial vocal partners, he also established himself as one of the era's dominant duet singers with the stunning "It Takes Two." However, Gaye's greatest duets were with Tammi Terrell, with whom he scored a series of massive hits penned by the team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, including 1967's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Your Precious Love," followed by 1968's "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By." The team's success was tragically cut short in 1967 when, during a concert appearance in Virginia, Terrell collapsed into Gaye's arms on-stage, the first evidence of a brain tumor that abruptly ended her performing career and finally killed her on March 16, 1970. Her illness and eventual loss left Gaye deeply shaken, marring the chart-topping 1968 success of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," his biggest hit and arguably the pinnacle of the Motown sound. At the same time, Gaye was forced to cope with a number of other personal problems, not the least of which was his crumbling marriage. He also found the material he recorded for Motown to be increasingly irrelevant in the face of the tremendous social changes sweeping the nation, and after scoring a pair of 1969 Top Ten hits with "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" and "That's the Way Love Is," he spent the majority of 1970 in seclusion, resurfacing early the next year with the self-produced What's Going On, a landmark effort heralding a dramatic shift in both content and style that forever altered the face of black music. A highly percussive album that incorporated jazz and classical elements to forge a remarkably sophisticated and fluid soul sound, What's Going On was a conceptual masterpiece that brought Gaye's deeply held spiritual beliefs to the fore to explore issues ranging from poverty and discrimination to the environment, drug abuse, and political corruption; chief among the record's concerns was the conflict in Vietnam, as Gaye structured the songs around the point of view of his brother Frankie, himself a soldier recently returned from combat. The ambitions and complexity of What's Going On baffled Berry Gordy, who initially refused to release the LP; he finally relented, although he maintained that he never understood the record's full scope. Gaye was vindicated when the majestic title track reached the number two spot in 1971, and both of the follow-ups, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," also reached the Top Ten. The album's success guaranteed Gaye continued artistic control over his work and helped loosen the reins for other Motown artists, most notably Stevie Wonder, to also take command of their own destinies. Consequently, in 1972, Gaye changed directions again, agreeing to score the blaxploitation thriller Trouble Man; the resulting soundtrack was a primarily instrumental effort showcasing his increasing interest in jazz, although a vocal turn on the moody, minimalist title track scored another Top Ten smash. The long-simmering eroticism implicit in much of Gaye's work reached its boiling point with 1973's Let's Get It On, one of the most sexually charged albums ever recorded; a work of intense lust and longing, it became the most commercially successful effort of his career, and the title cut became his second number one hit. Let's Get It On also marked another significant shift in Gaye's lyrical outlook, moving him from the political arena to a deeply personal, even insular stance that continued to define his subsequent work. After teaming with Diana Ross for the 1973 duet collection Marvin and Diana, he returned to work on his next solo effort, I Want You; however, the record's completion was delayed by his 1975 divorce from Anna Gordy. The dissolution of his marriage threw Gaye into a tailspin, and he spent much of the mid-'70s in divorce court. To combat Gaye's absence from the studio, Motown released the 1977 stopgap Live at the London Palladium, which spawned the single "Got to Give It Up, Pt. 1," his final number one hit. As a result of a 1976 court settlement, Gaye was ordered to make good on missed alimony payments by recording a new album, with the intention that all royalties earned from its sales would then be awarded to his ex-wife. The 1978 record, a two-LP set sardonically titled Here, My Dear, bitterly explored the couple's relationship in such intimate detail that Anna Gordy briefly considered suing Gaye for invasion of privacy. In the interim, he had remarried and begun work on another album, Lover Man, but scrapped the project when the "Ego Tripping Out" lead single - a telling personal commentary presented as a duet between the spiritual and sexual halves of his identity, which biographer David Ritz later dubbed the singer's "divided soul" - failed to chart. As his drug problems increased and his marriage to new wife Janis also began to fail, he relocated to Hawaii in an attempt to sort out his personal affairs. In 1981, longstanding tax difficulties and renewed pressures from the IRS forced Gaye to flee to Europe, where he began work on the ambitious In Our Lifetime, a deeply philosophical record that ultimately severed his longstanding relationship with Motown after he claimed the label had remixed and edited the album without his consent. Additionally, Gaye stated that the finished artwork parodied his original intent, and that even the title had been changed to drop an all-important question mark. Upon signing with Columbia in 1982, he battled stories of erratic behavior and a consuming addiction to cocaine to emerge triumphant with Midnight Love, an assured comeback highlighted by the luminous Top Three hit "Sexual Healing." The record made Gaye a star yet again, and in 1983 he made peace with Berry Gordy by appearing on a television special celebrating Motown's silver anniversary. That same year, he also sang a soulful and idiosyncratic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the NBA All-Star Game; it instantly became one of the most controversial and legendary interpretations of the anthem ever performed. And it was to be his final public appearance. Verdi - Falstaff (Herbert Von Karajan) [2008] PAL 4:3 (720x576) VBR | Italiano (LPCM, 2 ch); (Dolby AC3, 2 ch) | 7,59 Gb (DVD9) Classical | Label: Sony | Sub: Deutsch, English, Francais | 02:13:45 | Filesonic, Wupload, Fileserve ? This is a live 1982 production of Verdi's last opera, at the Salzburg festival with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker. The singers are Giuseppe Tadei (Sir John Falstaff), Raina Kabaivanska (Alice Ford), Rolando Panerai (Ford), Francisco Araiza (Fenton) and Christa Ludwig (Quickly). Musically, the performance is excellent and the stage is finely designed, specially the forest in the third act. Video quality is high and sound quality is good. I highly recommend this recording of Verdi's probably best opera. The Essential Alison Moyet is a long overdue video retrospective of one of Britain's finest modern pop singers. To many ears, she has the best vocal equipment of any female pop singer to grace the charts in the last 20 years: a range that can soar from throaty blues to crystalline elegance in a key change. This collection is indeed essential. But it also traces the less satisfactory aspects of Moyet's career. The early videos expose how inept the music industry is at creating an image for a unique and visually unconventional talent. Moyet's talent hasn't always been best served by her choice of material. Still, all those well-produced greatest hits are here: 'Love Resurrection', 'All Cried Out', 'Invisible' and 'Is This Love'. However, her version of 'That Ole Devil' is curiously soulless. Far more interesting are the later songs which reflect her greater input and satisfaction and a palpable relief at leaving the obligations of formulaic pop stardom behind. On the DVD: you can choose between PCM Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (by far the best) to enjoy this wide-ranging set. Moyet's commentary, presented in interview format, offers plenty of insight into the stages of a long career in the business. Of the multiple extras (photo gallery, Web site link and bonus tracks), the most interesting is a BBC guest appearance by Moyet singing a pared-down 'Cry Me A River' When the driving force behind Depeche Mode, Vince Clarke, left the band just after the breakthrough success of their first album, Speak & Spell, it?s probably quite fair to say that the remaining members were shitting themselves. However, history now shows that Martin Gore took over the songwriting duties, lending a more sombre tone to the band that went on to bring much ? joy isn?t quite the right word ? erm, satisfaction to those with more of a tendency toward the maudlin side of life worldwide. History also shows that Vince was renowned for possessing somewhat itchy feet ? having post-Depeche dalliances with Paul Quinn, former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey with the fleeting, but very successful, The Assembly, a little combo called Yazoo (or Yaz if you?re a Yank) and then Erasure ? where he finally seemed to feel comfy, most certainly to the delight of his partner in rhyme therein, Andy Bell. But let?s hark back to 1981 and Yazoo, for it was this little duo which introduced the world to Alison Moyet?s simply stunning vocal talents... The first single from the duo, Only You, was enough to stop most people in their tracks - a fairly minimalist melange of nursery rhyme-styled synth doodles with a voice on top that left most people with a half decent ear simply gaping in wonderment. When the more upbeat Don?t Go followed, it proved a hitherto unheard by the masses versatility in her voice that floored people even more. The debut album, Upstairs at Eric?s, held more surprises, as did future singles such as The Other Side of Love, and notably Nobody?s Diary. It is most unfortunate then that none of these tracks appear on this video collection, especially as they were licensed for two similarly themed CD compilations. What we do get, however, are videos for most of Alison?s solo singles, spanning the mid ?80s through to 2001 - from the chart-fodder limelight to less prominent, but no less impressive, fare (intriguingly accompanied by an equally noticeable increase in self confidence). Once again looking at the history books we see that Ms Moyet became (justifiably) renowned as one of Britain?s greatest and most award winning female vocal talents, and no further proof as to why is needed than a quick peek at this compilation. From somewhat visually and aurally cheesy beginnings with the likes of Love Resurrection and Invisible, through bluesy, soulful, poppy and raunchier offerings, one thing is always present ? that incredible vocal talent. Attached to images that sometimes enhance (the calling in of friends French and Saunders, the latter on Whispering Your Name (does anybody else remember our Ignatius Jones? earlier ? and brilliant ? take on the track?) in particular proving a blast, the infectious silliness of Is This Love?, the appearance of her little boy for Weak in the Presence of Beauty, the autumnal psychedelia of Falling etc) and sometimes hinder (any of the clips from her solo debut album Alf just for starters), this collection is both a testament to the woman?s fabulous and enduring talent, and simply a must-have for any of her fans. ? Roger Waters - The Wall: Live In Berlin (2003) DVD9 | Runtime: 111 min. | 7,64 Gb | Copy: Untouched Video: PAL, MPEG Video at 6 222 Kbps, 720 x 576 (1.333) at 25.000 fps | Audio: AC-3 2 channels at 256 Kbps, AC-3 6 channels at 448 Kbps, 48.0 KHz Genre: Rock, Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock | Label: Universal Music & Video Distribution ? Roger Waters' The Wall, Live In Berlin marks the second in a series of Pink Floyd related reviews I will be writing to commemorate the long awaited release of the band's Pulse DVD, which I reviewed last month. During the end of the 80's, after Roger Waters had left Pink Floyd, he began making plans to perform The Wall as a huge event, originally considering such grand places as the Sahara Desert, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon, and Wall Street. Around this time, plans were also underway for the reunification of Germany, and the Berlin wall eventually fell in November of 1989. The choice of location was now clearly obvious. The Wall, Live In Berlin was filmed at Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany on July 21st, 1990. Potsdamer Platz was the "no man's land" that sat between the two Berlin walls which separated East from West. By the time of the concert 250,000 tickets had been sold in advance and over 50 countries had signed on to broadcast the concert live. For fear of riots and injury, the concert gates eventually had to be taken down letting in an extra 100,000 people for free. The concert would also serve as a benefit for The Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief. The opening sequence showing the enormous stage, the massive white wall, already 3/4 built, and the vast sea of people was quite awe inspiring. For the opening number, "In The Flesh", the Scorpions are delivered to the stage (which is basically a two lane highway) via a white, stretch limo. What better band to open the show than Germany's own Scorpions, who were still one of the biggest metal bands on the planet in 1990. From there, it is a non-stop appearance of musicians and actors who were brought in to sing the songs, and act out the parts. This was more of a grand theater production, on the grandest of scales, than an actual rock concert. Ute Lemper, a successful German singer and stage actress, took the lead on "The Thin Ice" and sang beautifully. Garth Hudson handled the sax solo on "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 1", and was the first of many members of The Band to share the stage that night. During "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives" the giant, inflatable, alien-looking, "Teacher" makes its first appearance, menacingly dangling its long arms down the front of the wall. Many of the special guests who performed were not exactly Waters' first picks, and sound like odd choices when you hear them - Cyndi Lauper?, Bryan Adams?, Van Morrison?. Lauper appeared early on, wearing a naughty school girl uniform to take on "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2". Her idiosyncratic vocals sounded a little over the top at times, and may not have been the best fit for this song, but her character was perfect for the show. Thomas Dolby joined her midway, and his strange appearance made everything else look comparatively normal. During the song, crew members are continuously adding giant, white, polystyrene blocks to the 600 foot long and 60 foot high wall, slowly closing up the main opening that still exposes the band. Much of the same filler that bogged down The Wall album, "Oh My God", "One Of My Turns", "Don't Leave Me Now", "Vera", "Bring The Boys Back Home", bogs down parts of this performance as well, but they provide a necessary backdrop for the storyline. During "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 3", all but four blocks of the wall have put into place, leaving only a cross shaped opening from which Waters exits through to sing "Goodbye Cruel World". Just as he sings the final "goodbye", the last brick is placed in the wall, closing off the band until the finale. Poor Paul Carrack had to sing the entire "Hey You" staring at the wall, but he sang as if the song had been written especially for him. Excellent vocals. Some of the other worthy guest spots were Joni Mitchell on "Goodbye Blue Sky", Sinead O'Connor doing "Mother", and Bryan Adam's rockin' "Young Lust". An orchestra, marching band, and choir are eventually marched out over the course of the next few songs, beginning with "Vera". It was fascinating to hear Waters explaining, in the special features, how he was able to secure The Military Orchestra Of The Soviet Army, at a time when there was still two separate governments, and a major Soviet military base, operating in Berlin. His less than flattering description of the orchestra's musical skills was pretty amusing too. While waiting for "Comfortably Numb", I was very curious as to how this Pink Floyd epic would sound with Van Morrison singing David Gilmour's parts. Now I love Van's voice and his music, but this seemed kind of like asking Bob Dylan to sing "Stairway To Heaven". I was thinking more of a Geoff Tate (Queensryche) type for this part, but Morrison did a nice job making it his own - in a Joe Cocker does "Little Help From My Friends" kind of way. Rick Difonzo and Snowy White took turns on the guitar solos, with Difonzo faithfully cloning Gilmour's parts, while White improvised with the notes and tone a bit more. During "Run Like Hell" the giant inflatable pig, which has been a staple of Pink Floyd concerts since the 80's, made its first appearance, knocking several blocks off the top of the wall in the process. At the end of "The Trial", judged by famous British actor Albert Finney, the entire wall begins to crumble from the top as the chorus and crowd chant "TEAR DOWN THE WALL!". It was quite an amazing spectacle to look out over the entire crowd, from behind, and see what was once this massive white wall now reduced to a smoldering pile of rubble on the stage. Curiously, the last song performed, after the wall has crumbled, was not "Outside The Wall", from the album, but was "The Tide Is Turning" from Waters' Radio K.A.O.S. solo album. Where "Outside The Wall" neatly wraps up the story of The Wall, "The Tide Is Turning" relates more to the inspiration brought about by the Berlin Wall's demise. With all of the guests joining in on this happy sing-a-long, it did seem a little too "We are The World" kind of cheesy. German reunification took place a few months later on October 3, 1990, when the areas of the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) were incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The picture and audio on this DVD were both admirable, considering this was transferred from an analog recording that was made for TV broadcast. The video looks clean, sharp, and displays only minimal grain. It was kept in its original full frame format. Audio is provided in both Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo. I listened to the surround track and it allowed each of the musicians to be heard clearly in the mix. Even with the multiple orchestras and choirs, the mix presented everything superbly. The Bonus Material featured a half-hour documentary that begins with the history of Berlin and then features interviews with Waters and most of the show's key producers and set designers. Also included is some unseen footage, animations, and a photo gallery. The Wall, Live In Berlin is a DVD that every Pink Floyd or Roger Waters fan should see at least once. The location and historic relevancy of the performance made what would have just been another big rock concert, something much more special. This was truly a one of a kind event, that turned out remarkably well, considering the insane logistics that must have been involved. ? Rare performance footage, including Blitzkreig Bop, Beat On The Brat, Judy Is A Punk, Rockaway Beach, The KKK Took My Baby Away and many more! The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials -- four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics -- and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early '60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary. Since their breakthrough was theoretical as well as musical, they comfortably became the leaders of the emerging New York punk rock scene. While their peers such as Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, and Richard Hell all were more intellectual and self-consciously artistic than the Ramones, they nevertheless appealed to the same mentality because of the way they turned rock conventions inside out and celebrated kitschy pop culture with stylized stupidity. The band's first four albums set the blueprint for punk, especially American punk and hardcore, for the next two decades. And the Ramones themselves were major figures for the next two decades, playing essentially the same music without changing their style much at all. Although some punk diehards -- including several of their peers -- would have claimed the band's long career wound up undercutting the ideals the band originally stood for, the Ramones always celebrated not just the punk aesthetic, but the music itself. Based in the Forest Hills section of Queens, NY, the Ramones formed in 1974. Originally, the band was a trio consisting of Joey Ramone (vocals, drums; born Jeffrey Hyman, May 19, 1951), Johnny Ramone (guitar; born John Cummings, Oct. 8, 1951), and Dee Dee Ramone (bass; born Douglas Colvin, Sept. 18, 1952), with Tommy Ramone (born Tom Erdelyi, Jan. 29, 1952) acting as the group's manager. All of the group's members adopted the last name "Ramone" and dressed in torn blue jeans and leather jackets, in homage to '50s greaser rockers. The group played their first concert on March 30, 1974, at New York's Performance Studio. Two months after the show, Joey switched to vocals and Tommy became the band's drummer. By the end of the summer, the Ramones earned a residency at CBGB's. For the next year, they played regularly at the nightclub, earning a dedicated cult following and inspiring several other artists to form bands with similar ideals. All of the Ramones sets clocked in at about 20 minutes, featuring an unrelenting barrage of short, barely two-minute songs. By the end of 1975, the Ramones secured a recording contract with Sire; discounting Patti Smith, they were the first New York punk band to sign a contract. Early in 1976, the Ramones recorded their debut album for just over 6,000 dollars. The resulting album, Ramones, was released in the spring, gained some critical attention, and managed to climb to 111 on the U.S. album charts. On July 4, the band made their debut appearance in Britain, where their records were becoming a big influence on a new generation of bands. Throughout 1976, the Ramones toured constantly, inaugurating nearly 20 years of relentless touring. By the end of the year, the group released their second album, Ramones Leave Home. While the album just scraped the U.S. charts, Leave Home became a genuine hit in England in the spring of 1977, peaking at number 48. By the summer of 1977, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were seen as the two key bands in the punk rock revolution, but where the Pistols imploded, the Ramones kept on rolling. Following the U.K. Top 40 hit "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," the Ramones released their third album, Rocket to Russia, in the fall of 1977. Tommy Ramone left the band in the spring of 1977, although he produced the group's subsequent album. He was replaced by former Voidoid Marc Bee, who immediately changed his name to Marky Ramone. With their new drummer in place, the Ramones recorded their fourth album, Road to Ruin, which was released in the fall. Road to Ruin marked the band's first significant attempt to change their sound; not only were there stronger bubblegum, girl group, surf, and '60s pop influences on the music, it was the first of their albums to run over a half hour. Although their sound was more accessible, it didn't gain the band a noticeably larger following. Neither did Rock N' Roll High School, the 1979 Roger Corman film in which the Ramones had a pivotal part. The soundtrack to Rock N' Roll High School and the U.K.-only live album It's Alive were the band's only releases of 1979. For most of the year, they were in the studio recording their fifth album with legendary '60s pop producer Phil Spector. The title song to the Corman movie was the first track released from the sessions, although the soundtrack album did feature a number of older Ramones songs remixed by Spector. End of the Century, the Spector-produced Ramones album, finally appeared in January of 1980 to mixed reviews. Despite the lukewarm reception to the album, the record's cover of the Ronettes' "Baby I Love You" became their only Top Ten British hit; in America, none of the singles made an impact, although the record became their biggest hit, peaking at number 44. The Ramones continued their attempts at crossover success with their sixth album, Pleasant Dreams, which was released in 1981. Featuring a production by former Hollies and 10cc member Graham Gouldman, the record was a commercial disappointment in both America and England. The band was relatively quiet during 1982, spending most of their time touring. In the spring of 1983, the band returned with Subterranean Jungle, which was produced by Ritchie Cordell and Glen Koltkin, the heads of the American indie label Beserkley Records. Not only did Subterranean Jungle fail to gain the band the larger audience they desired, it continued the erosion of the band's diehard fan base, as well as their decline in the eyes of many rock critics. Following the album's release, Marky Ramone left the band; he was replaced by Richard Beau, a former member of the Velveteens, who changed his name to Richie Ramone. ? Diego El Cigala - Cigala & Tango (2011) DVD9 | NTSC 720x480 (16:9) 29.97fps 5505kbp | 7.61 GB | Filesonic / Wupload / Fileserve / Freakshare Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 ch., DTS 5.1 ch., LPCM 2.0 ch. | Length: 01:16:36 + 00:47:37 DVD Release Date: 2011 | Genre: Flamenco Nuevo, Flamenco, Folk ? Concert in the Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar, known as El Cigala (Spanish for 'Norway Lobster', a shellfish popular in Spain), is a famous Spanish Romani Flamenco singer. As he himself has said, the nickname was given to him by three guitar players, Los Losada, for being very thin, not by Camarón de la Isla as commonly believed. One of his great albums is 2003's "Lágrimas Negras", a cooperation with then 85 year old Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés. The easy fusion of Cuban rhythms and flamenco vocals made this record an international success. Born into a family of Spanish Gypsy artists and intellectuals in Madrid, El Cigala started singing in flamenco peñas (enthusiasts' clubs) and tablaos, until his excellent meter and ability to mark the rhythm caught the attention of world-class bailaores like Mario Maya, Faíco, Farruco, El Güito, Manuela Carrasco, Cristóbal Reyes, Carmen Cortés, Joaquín Cortés and he began touring as part of their companies. By the late nineties, having collaborated on recordings by Camarón, Tomatito, Gerardo Núñez and Vicente Amigo, he was ready to record his own CD. With the success of "Undebel" he launched his career as solo singer. He has now recorded 8 CDs and has won two Grammys and 5 Latin Grammy nominations. The Complete Jam contains a number of British television performances and spreads them out over two discs. There is the BBC's popular The Old Grey Whistle Test, Marc (hosted by the flamboyant Marc Bolan of T-Rex fame), The Tube (which features an impromptu Peter Weller interview), and Something Else. There are 12 television spots with over 30 song performances. Also included are 16 videos of some of their most popular songs including Town Called Malice, That's Entertainment, Eton Rifles, and Start!. The set continues with contribution pieces Scene: The Fan Phenomenon and The Jam: A Time and a Place, which are insightful looks into the band and serve to augment the videos. The Jam were the most popular band to emerge from the initial wave of British punk rock in 1977; along with the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Buzzcocks, the Jam had the most impact on pop music. While they could barely get noticed in America, the trio became genuine superstars in Britain, with an impressive string of Top Ten singles in the late '70s and early '80s. The Jam could never have a hit in America because they were thoroughly and defiantly British. Under the direction of guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Paul Weller, the trio spearheaded a revival of mid-'60s mod groups, in the style of the Who and the Small Faces. Like the mod bands, the group dressed stylishly, worshipped American R&B, and played it loud and rough. By the time of the group's third album, Weller's songwriting had grown substantially, as he was beginning to write social commentaries and pop songs in the vein of the Kinks. Both his political songs and his romantic songs were steeped in British culture, filled with references and slang in the lyrics, as well as musical allusions. Furthermore, as the Jam grew more popular and musically accessible, Weller became more insistent and stubborn about his beliefs, supporting leftist causes and adhering to the pop aesthetics of '60s British rock without ever succumbing to hippie values. Paradoxically, that meant even when their music became more pop than punk, they never abandoned the punk values - if anything, Weller stuck to the strident independent ethics of 1977 more than any other punk band just by simply refusing to change. Weller formed the Jam with drummer Rick Buckler, bassist Bruce Foxton, and guitarist Steve Brookes while they were still in school in 1975; Brookes quickly left the band and they remained a trio for the rest of their career. For the next year, the band played gigs around London, building a local following. In February 1977, the group signed a record contract with Polydor Records; two months later, they released their debut single, "In the City," which reached the U.K. Top 40. The following month, the group released their debut album, also called In the City. Recorded in just 11 days, the album featured a combinations of R&B covers and Weller originals, all of which sounded a bit like faster, more ragged versions of the Who's early records. Their second single, "All Around the World," nearly broke into the British Top Ten and the group embarked on a successful British tour. During the summer of 1977, they recorded their second album, This Is the Modern World, which was released toward the end of the year. "The Modern World" made it into the Top 40 in November, just as the Jam were beginning their first American tour. Although it was brief, the tour was not successful, leaving bitter memories of the U.S. in the minds of the band. This Is the Modern World peaked in the British charts at number 22, yet it received criticism for repeating the sound of the debut. The band began a headlining tour of the U.K., yet it was derailed shortly after it started when the group got into a nasty fight with a bunch of rugby players in a Leeds hotel. Weller broke several bones and was charged with assault, although the Leeds Crown Court would eventually acquit him. The Jam departed for another American tour in March of 1978 and it was yet another unsuccessful tour, as they opened for Blue Öyster Cult. It did nothing to win new American fans, yet their star continued to rise in Britain. Bands copying the group's mod look and sound popped up across Britain and the Jam itself performed at the Reading Festival in August. All Mod Cons, released late in 1978, marked a turning point in the Jam's career, illustrating that Weller's songwriting was becoming more melodic, complex, and lyrically incisive, resembling Ray Davies more than Pete Townshend. Even as their sound became more pop-oriented, the group lost none of their tightly controlled energy. All Mod Cons was a major success, peaking at number six on the U.K. charts, even if it didn't make a dent in the U.S. Every one of the band's singles were now charting in the Top 20, with the driving "Eton Rifles" becoming their first Top Ten in November 1979, charting at number three. Setting Sons, released at the end of 1979, climbed to number four in the U.K. and marked their first charting album in the U.S., hitting number 137 in spring of 1980. At that time, the Jam had become full-fledged rock stars in Britain, with their new "Going Underground" single entering the charts at number one. During the summer, the band recorded their fifth album, with the "Taxman"-inspired "Start" released as a teaser single in August; "Start" became their second straight number one. Its accompanying album, the ambitious Sound Affects, hit number two in the U.K. at the end of the year; it was also the band's high-water mark in the U.S., peaking at number 72. "That's Entertainment," one of the standout tracks from Sound Affects, charted at number 21 in the U.K. as an import single, confirming the band's enormous popularity. "Funeral Pyre," the band's summer 1981 single, showed signs that Weller was becoming fascinated with American soul and R&B, as did the punchy, horn-driven "Absolute Beginners," which hit number four in the fall of the year. As the Jam were recording their sixth album, Weller suffered a nervous breakdown, which prompted him to stop drinking. In February 1982, the first single from the new sessions - the double A-sided "Town Called Malice"/"Precious" - became their third number one single and the band became the first group since the Beatles to play two songs on BBC's Top of the Pops. The Gift, released in March of 1982, showcased the band's soul infatuation and became the group's first number one album in the U.K. "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero" hit number eight in July, becoming the group's second import single to make the U.K. charts. ? Counting Crows - August And Everything After: Live From Town Hall (2011) DVD-9 | Runtime: 121 min. | 6,94 Gb | Copy: Untouched Video: NTSC, MPEG Video at 7 037 Kbps, 720 x 480 (1.778) at 29.970 fps | Audio: English, AC-3 2ch. at 224 Kbps, AC-3 6ch. at 448 Kbps, DTS 6ch. at 1 510 Kbps Genre: Rock, Pop/Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock | Label: Eagle Vision | Subtitles: French, English, German “ I've seen Counting Crows live several times. I admit fully to being a fan and there are several reasons for that. (See how "Mr. Jones" is already slipping into this piece?) I was quite pleased to receive a copy of the Counting Crows' concert DVD, August And Everything After: Live At Town Hall. This particular concert is unique because for this one show, the set list was the album August And Everything After, (and is there a fan out there who doesn't love this album?) played beginning to end. After watching this DVD, I think I would have given my right leg to be at that show. I've always loved Adam Duritz's lyrics because his metaphors have always spoken to me. Sitting at home listening to a Counting Crows album makes me want to write. But watching Duritz and the Counting Crows perform is an entirely different experience. This DVD captures their phenomenal performance experience in a way I didn't expect. Duritz is amazing on stage and I'm always blown away by the depth and range of emotion he can project while performing. He is at times tortured, angry, melancholy, exuberant, or playing the clown. And it never feels practiced because I have literally seen him in concerts play one song incredibly angry and then at another performance sing the same song full of sorrow. But this concert is not solely an Adam Duritz act: the musical adeptness of the band is astounding. Counting Crows is a band known for its improvisation on stage, which they do extensively in this concert, and the way the band can keep up with Duritz' change-ups is impressive. But more than that the inherent joy the band obviously feels performing this concert simply leaks out of the TV screen and infects the viewer. The DVD opens with a stunning and poignant mashed rendition of "Round Here" and "Raining In Baltimore" and that primes you for the rest of the concert. Which takes you on a rapturous journey that ultimately celebrates not only the album August And Everything After, but the journey of the band's experience from the album that started it all, through the growth and changes that were added over the years, to where they are today. The DVD also includes an in-depth interview with Adam Duritz and Charlie Gillingham that provides some not-so-surprising insights into the tumultuous creation of the album and how maintaining their creative freedom was the best decision they made. As much as I highly (highly!) recommend this concert DVD to anyone, not just Counting Crows fans, I still feel like this review is falling short. It is just really hard to capture the complexity of the performance that is the Counting Crows. There is almost a serendipity to how this band comes together, almost accidentally, to create something amazing. Counting Crows - with their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows became an overnight sensation in 1994. Only a year earlier, the band was a group of unknown musicians, filling in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony; they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson. Early in 1993, the band recorded their debut album, August and Everything After, with T-Bone Burnett. Released the fall, it was a dark and somber record, driven by the morose lyrics and expressive vocals of Adam Duritz. The only up-tempo song, "Mr. Jones," became their ticket to stardom, and Counting Crows enjoyed a significant amount of success throughout the '90s and beyond. What made Counting Crows unique was how they were able to balance Duritz's tortured lyrics with the sound of the late '60s and early '70s; it made them one of the few alternative bands to appeal to listeners who thought that rock & roll died in 1972. Recovering the Satellites followed in 1996, and "A Long December" was a Top 10 hit on both the Modern Rock and Adult Top 40 charts. The band issued the two-disc Across a Wire: Live in New York in 1998, and the following year saw the release of Counting Crows' third studio album, This Desert Life. In the midst of recording and collaborating with Ryan Adams on his sophomore album, Gold, Duritz joined his band in the studio as well. The fruit of those sessions was the Steve Lillywhite-produced fourth album, Hard Candy. The next year saw the release of the best-of Films About Ghosts, and in 2004 Counting Crows reminded fans of their ability to write a hit single with "Accidentally in Love," which appeared on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Two years later, New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall, recorded from a show on February 6, 2003, was made available to the public. Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings appeared in 2008. ” Tracklist: 01. Round Here / Raining In Baltimore 02. Omaha 03. Mr. Jones 04. Introduction To Perfect Blue Buildings 05. Herbie Hancock - will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz -- just as his employer/mentor Miles Davis was when he was alive. Unlike Miles, who pressed ahead relentlessly and never looked back until near the very end, Hancock has cut a zigzagging forward path, shuttling between almost every development in electronic and acoustic jazz and R&B over the last third of the 20th century and into the 21st. Though grounded in Bill Evans and able to absorb blues, funk, gospel, and even modern classical influences, Hancock's piano and keyboard voices are entirely his own, with their own urbane harmonic and complex, earthy rhythmic signatures -- and young pianists cop his licks constantly. Having studied engineering and professing to love gadgets and buttons, Hancock was perfectly suited for the electronic age; he was one of the earliest champions of the Rhodes electric piano and Hohner clavinet, and would field an ever-growing collection of synthesizers and computers on his electric dates. Yet his love for the grand piano never waned, and despite his peripatetic activities all around the musical map, his piano style continued to evolve into tougher, ever more complex forms. He is as much at home trading riffs with a smoking funk band as he is communing with a world-class post-bop rhythm section -- and that drives purists on both sides of the fence up the wall. Having taken up the piano at age seven, Hancock quickly became known as a prodigy, soloing in the first movement of a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 11. After studies at Grinnell College, Hancock was invited by Donald Byrd in 1961 to join his group in New York City, and before long, Blue Note offered him a solo contract. His debut album, Takin' Off, took off indeed after Mongo Santamaria covered one of the album's songs, "Watermelon Man." In May 1963, Miles Davis asked him to join his band in time for the Seven Steps to Heaven sessions, and he remained there for five years, greatly influencing Miles' evolving direction, loosening up his own style, and, upon Miles' suggestion, converting to the Rhodes electric piano. In that time span, Hancock's solo career also blossomed on Blue Note, pouring forth increasingly sophisticated compositions like "Maiden Voyage," "Cantaloupe Island," "Goodbye to Childhood," and the exquisite "Speak Like a Child." He also played on many East Coast recording sessions for producer Creed Taylor and provided a groundbreaking score to Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blow Up, which gradually led to further movie assignments. Having left the Davis band in 1968, Hancock recorded an elegant funk album, Fat Albert Rotunda, and in 1969 formed a sextet that evolved into one of the most exciting, forward-looking jazz-rock groups of the era. Now deeply immersed in electronics, Hancock added the synthesizer of Patrick Gleeson to his Echoplexed, fuzz-wah-pedaled electric piano and clavinet, and the recordings became spacier and more complex rhythmically and structurally, creating its own corner of the avant-garde. By 1970, all of the musicians used both English and African names (Herbie's was Mwandishi). Alas, Hancock had to break up the band in 1973 when it ran out of money, and having studied Buddhism, he concluded that his ultimate goal should be to make his audiences happy. The next step, then, was a terrific funk group whose first album, Head Hunters, with its Sly Stone-influenced hit single, "Chameleon," became the biggest-selling jazz LP up to that time. Now handling all of the synthesizers himself, Hancock's heavily rhythmic comping often became part of the rhythm section, leavened by interludes of the old urbane harmonies. Hancock recorded several electric albums of mostly superior quality in the '70s, followed by a wrong turn into disco around the decade's end. In the meantime, Hancock refused to abandon acoustic jazz. After a one-shot reunion of the 1965 Miles Davis Quintet (Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, with Freddie Hubbard sitting in for Miles) at New York's 1976 Newport Jazz Festival, they went on tour the following year as V.S.O.P. The near-universal acclaim of the reunions proved that Hancock was still a whale of a pianist; that Miles' loose mid-'60s post-bop direction was far from spent; and that the time for a neo-traditional revival was near, finally bearing fruit in the '80s with Wynton Marsalis and his ilk. V.S.O.P. continued to hold sporadic reunions through 1992, though the death of the indispensable Williams in 1997 cast much doubt as to whether these gatherings would continue. Hancock continued his chameleonic ways in the '80s: scoring an MTV hit in 1983 with the scratch-driven, proto-industrial single "Rockit" (accompanied by a striking video); launching an exciting partnership with Gambian kora virtuoso Foday Musa Suso that culminated in the swinging 1986 live album Jazz Africa; doing film scores; and playing festivals and tours with the Marsalis brothers, George Benson, Michael Brecker, and many others. After his 1988 techno-pop album, Perfect Machine, Hancock left Columbia (his label since 1973), signed a contract with Qwest that came to virtually nothing (save for A Tribute to Miles in 1992), and finally made a deal with Polygram in 1994 to record jazz for Verve and release pop albums on Mercury. Well into a youthful middle age, Hancock's curiosity, versatility, and capacity for growth showed no signs of fading, and in 1998 he issued Gershwin's World. His curiosity with the fusion of electronic music and jazz continued with 2001's Future 2 Future, but he also continued to explore the future of straight-ahead contemporary jazz with 2005's Possibilities. An intriguing album of jazz treatments of Joni Mitchell compositions called River: The Joni Letters was released in 2007. In 2010 Hancock released his The Imagine Project album, which was recorded in seven countries and featured a host of collaborators, including Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, the Chieftains, John Legend, India.Arie, Seal, P!nk, Juanes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Chaka Khan, K'NAAN, Wayne Shorter, James Morrison, and Lisa Hannigan. He was also named Creative Chair for the New Los Angeles Philharmonic. ? Artists: Eagles ? Herbie Hancock: Piano, Keyboards ? Matthew Garrison: Bass ? Terri Lyne Carrington: Drums, Vocals ?
