Un planteamiento novedoso para el genero que muestra lo divertido de la situacion, pero tambien lo duro que resulta y el riesgo que conlleva. La pelicula supone el debut en la ficcion de la directora de documentales Nanette Burstein, nominada a un Oscar por On the Ropes. El guion conecta muy bien con las personas que han vivido una situacion parecida, de hecho, esta inspirado en varias historias reales. La pareja que tiene que estar Salvando las distancias es la compuesta por Drew Barrymore y Justin Long. Ella esta acostumbrada a protagonizar comedias romanticas (Tu la letra, yo la musica, Que les pasa a los hombres), pero el es mas conocido por sus incursiones en otro tipo de cine (La jungla 4.0, Arrastrame al infierno). Pero su suerte no ha mejorado. La lonchera cae por una coladera al drenaje de la ciudad, donde un par de tlacuaches hambrientos los ven y deciden cenarlos.
