Sinopsis:

A los diez años, Gon es capturado por un oso-zorro salvaje, pero es liberado gracias a Kite, un cazador que venía de un largo viaje. Al mencionarle Gon a Kite el nombre de su padre (Ging Freecss), presuntamente fallecido según lo que le había contado su madre adoptiva Mito, Kite le cuenta que en realidad es falso, que su padre es el mejor cazador del mundo.
Cuando Gon cumple los 12 años, en contra de la voluntad de Mito, decide marcharse por su cuenta hacia donde se realiza el Examen de cazador. Durante el camino conoce a Leorio, y a Curarpikt, y deciden emprender el camino hacia el lugar del examen juntos, consiguiendo llegar allí tras pasar diversas pruebas.
