Todo empieza cuando su mejor amigo, Marshall, un brillante estudiante de Derecho, suelta la noticia bomba de que le va a proponer matrimonio a su novia de tantos años, Lily, que trabaja de profesora de una guardería. Aunque Ted le intenta convencer de que el matrimonio no hay que planteárselo hasta llegar a los 30, las noticias de esta boda, le producen un impulso extraño en él. En ese preciso momento, Ted se da cuenta de que tiene que darse prisa y empezar a moverse si él también quiere lograr encontrar el amor verdadero.
