El juego fue desarrollado por Ensemble Studios y publicado por Microsoft en el año 1999. El juego fue un gran éxito de ventas, por lo que se hizo un expansión del juego: Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion, más tarde una Gold Edition que incluía el juego y la expansión, y finalmente en el año 2005 salió al mercado la secuela: Age of Empires III. En otras palabras un juego de estrategia de guerra muy conocido basado entre los años 600 - 1600.
