El primer álbum de Wintersun se suponía iba a ser un proyecto paralelo del integrante de Ensiferum, Jari Mäenpää. Sin embargo, la gira europea de Ensiferum fue desafortunadamente programada para la misma fecha en que comenzaba a grabarse "Wintersun". Mäenpää se vio obligado a escoger entre su ya agendada grabación del disco y Ensiferum; él escogió Wintersun y tuvo que dejar atrás a Ensiferum. "Wintersun" fue grabado completamente por Jari Mäenpää, solo con un baterista de sesión (Kai Hahto) para realizar la percusión. Jari realizo las voces, bajo, guitarras y sintetizador solo. El 13 de Septiembre del 2004, el álbum Wintersun fue lanzado por Nuclear Blast Records. Sus letras tratan sobre el invierno, la astronomía y creación, la muerte, alucinaciones y sueños. Lo más característico de su letra es el dilema de la vida ante la muerte. El estilo resultante de Wintersun es Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal. En mi opinión, un disco que deben tener, con mucha influencia del viking y el black, aunque en lineas generales sea melodic death metal, además se encontrarán con espectaculares solos de guitarras y percusión a 100 por hora con blast beats ultra rápidos.
