Aunque se presenta como el videojuego más vendido de la historia, en realidad el Super Mario Bros. ostenta este título, con más de 40 millones de copias frente a los 17 millones del Super Mario Bros. 3. Sin embargo, Super Mario Bros. 3 sí es el juego más vendido por separado de una consola[1] . El juego se renovó y se volvió a publicar como Super Mario All-Stars para Super NES, y más tarde como Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 para Game Boy Advance.
