7CD set. Collects five studio albums from "First Under The Wire" (1979) to "No Reins" (1986), plus double live album "Backstage Pass" (1979) and three BONUS tracks. Little River Band are an Australian rock band, formed in the early to mid 70s in Melbourne. They have had a number of massive sellers, their mainstream rock with a commercial edge finding more success in the US than the UK. With more than 30 members come and gone, the band are currently operating with no original members.This box collects the six albums recorded for Capitol, having previously issued four albums on EMI. Each album looks and feels good in a replica card sleeve, with a booklet in a nice box.
Kicking off with First Under The Wire, it's a solid and melodic affair, a massive hit in the US, and very radio friendly. Tracks like 'Cool Change' and 'By My Side' carry an excellent tune, but the emphasis is as much about strings and keyboards as it is guitars, the production very big.
Originally issued as two separate single albums, Backstage Pass is a double live album that spans the career to that point. The 10 minute 'Light Of Day' fans will enjoy, but the big production (strings and more strings) and often a very polite feel give an MOR feel. When the band break through there are some great performances,
1981's Time Exposure was produced by George Martin, and the opening track 'The Night Owls' has quite a funky feel, a groove that really gets you nodding. One of the better albums here.
The Net (1983) featured John Farnham and continues the rocking groove, albeit in a commercial manner. The Saxophone works well with the guitar here.
Playing To Win (1985) features some blistering guitar and instantly grabs. The guitar and keyboard interplay works well here.
No Reins (1986), the last album here and last with Farnham, sounds more 80s, a little dated compared to the previous two albums. Even so, it's a good listen.
Although there's a foot firmly planted in the soft rock genre, it's pretty enjoyable and an excellent package
