MicroAngelo 16-bit format (icl) and 16-bit executables (NE) is no longer supported and Icon Explorer now creates 32-bit DLLs as icon libraries. 32-bit icons and 256x256 sized icons are supported. It has powerfull searching tool that searches specified path with directory recursion and examines any file if it contains any icon and then extract it. Icons can be saved as icons, individual icon images or bitmaps. With the aid of Icon Explorer you can inspect executable files and extract icons to save them on the disk to ICO format. They can also be saved as regular images with the TIFF, GIF, BMP, WMF, PSD, PNG and JPEG extensions, among others. No installation required This is a portable application, which means that it's not wrapped in a setup pack. Instead, you can drop its executable file anywhere on the computer or on a portable devices, in order to directly launch the app without worrying about any installers. Additionally, it doesn't make any changes to the Windows registry. Approachable GUI and options Users shouldn't have any trouble in figuring out the interface and options. It consists of an integrated file explorer to help you quickly locate executables and it allows you to check out the name, number of containing icons, date of last modification, size, and full path for each file. Preview and extract icons You can preview the thumbnail of icons, find out the resolution of each one, as well as easily save it as an icon or image by just specifying the output directory, file name and extension. What's more, you can add all icons to the view or save them to the library. Automatically find all executables in drives Icon Explorer is capable of clearing the previous selection. It's also possible to display only 32-bit icons while hiding the rest, customize the icon background color, as well as to conduct a search operation on any drive for executables, include subfolders, ignore duplicates, and automatically add all identified icons to the view. Evaluation and conclusion The tool didn't put a strain on the computer's performance throughout our tests, thanks to the fact that it required low CPU and memory to work properly. Scan jobs were carried out in reasonable time. We haven't come across any unpleasant surprises, as it didn't freeze, crash or prompt errors. Although it hasn't been updated for a while, Icon Explorer offers a simple solution to viewing and extracting icons from executables, and it can be seamlessly handled by anyone.
