He was born in Woodlake, California, and raised in Ukiah. He began taking guitar lessons at age 13 in 1965, and bought his first guitar at age 19, in 1969. Charles Ford, his father, had his own blues band, Charles Ford Blues Band, which appeared as musicians Robben and his brothers. The world famous as a guitarist came in 1986, the year in which he appeared as a guitarist on the staff of the tour of Miles Davis, to merge Superbly jazz and blues in an innovative way. Robben Ford has also played live and collaborated on albums with Jimmy Witherspoon, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell with Tom Scott's L.A.
