En 1820, un hombre que vive en las montañas resulta herido de muerte por el ataque de un oso. Viendo que nada pueden hacer por él, sus compañeros lo abandonan en el bosque. Pero sorprendentemente se repone de sus heridas y trata de vengarse de quienes lo abandonaron a su suerte. El film está basado en un personaje histórico, Hugh Glass, trampero y explorador de finales del siglo XIX, en el que se inspiró Michael Punke para escribir la novela.
