That day, Hopkins felt that the blues was "in him" and began learning from his cousin, country blues singer Alger "Texas" Alexander. In the mid-30s, Hopkins was sent to the county jail in Texas for an unknown crime. In late 1930 Hopkins moved to Houston with Alexander in an unsuccessful attempt to succeed in the music scene there.
