Tom Sawyer es un chico travieso del Mississipi al que le gustan mucho las aventuras, aunque es ducho a meterse siempre en problemas. Trae de cabeza a su tía Polly por su indisciplinado comportamiento y las peleas con su hermanastro Sid son constantes. Tras una salida nocturna con su amigo, Huckleberry Finn, presencia la muerte del borracho del pueblo a manos del indio Joe. Al decir la verdad sobre lo ocurrido ante el juez, Tom se convierte en objetivo del asesino, que jura vengarse.
