Cuando era más pequeño, Gon fue capturado por un oso-zorro salvaje, pero fue liberado gracias a la ayuda de un cazador, quien le revela que su padre (presuntamente muerto) seguía vivo, además de que también era un cazador. Así, en contra de los deseos de su tía Mito-san, decide convertirse en cazador junto a Leorio, Kurapika y Killua y de este modo poder encontrar a su padre.
