Rafael Angel Leavitt Rey,desiende de Judios Coversos conocido en el ambiente musical por Raphy Leavitt, nació el 17 de septiembre de 1948 en Puerta de Tierra, barrio de San Juan, Puerto Rico. Es el segundo de cuatro hermanos de una familia de clase media. Quedó huérfano de madre cuando tenía tres años y, apenas comenzando su adolescencia, también perdió a su progenitor. Es casado y padre de dos hijos, una hembra y un varón.
