Eddie Felson (Newman) es un joven arrogante y amoral que frecuenta con éxito las salas de billar. Decidido a ser proclamado el mejor, busca al Gordo de Minnesota (Gleason), un legendario campeón de billar. Cuando, por fin, consigue enfrentarse con él, su falta de seguridad le hace fracasar.
