Su informal estilo de vida en Malibú es interrumpida drásticamente con la llegada de su hermano Alan (Jon Cryer), quien está muy deprimido tras afrontar un divorcio, y de su hijo de 10 años, Jake (Angus T. Jones), que se mudan para quedarse a vivir con él. Para complicar aún más las cosas, está la egocéntrica y controladora madre de Charlie y Alan, Evelyn (Holland Taylor), la mujer de Alan, Judith (Marin Hinkle), de la que actualmente se está separando y que posiblemente sea lesbiana; Rose (Melanie Lynskey), una mujer muy atractiva, poco convencional y posiblemente un poco loca, vecina de Charlie, con quien ha tenido una breve aventura y que está decidida a quedarse en su vida de la forma que sea necesaria; y Berta (Conchata Ferrell), la dominante ama de llaves de Charlie. A pesar de la complejidad de las vidas de cada uno de los hermanos y de sus tirantes relaciones entre ellos, Charlie y Alan tienen una cosa en común: ambos adoran a Jack y quieren lo mejor para él.
