Sus creadores fueron el líder y vocalista Fred Durst y el bajista Sam Rivers. Posteriormente se unirían el primo de Rivers John Otto como baterista, y el guitarrista Rob Waters, sustituido más tarde por Wes Borland. Un tiempo después se unió el ex miembro de House of Pain DJ Lethal como tocadiscos, completando la formación. Limp Bizkit es uno de los grupos más enérgicos dentro del género Nu metal, y concretamente dentro del rap metal, y considerada también como una de las grandes bandas a finales de los años 90. Como base musical, tiene influencias de géneros como el heavy metal, el metal alternativo y el rap, incorporando a veces elementos de thrash metal y funk.
